Tension on TN

This was a very interesting read this morning over my beechams. I personally dont feel that this forum has become any worse lately. Forums are always they same. Some bad eggs trying to stir the pot and some good ones trying to stop them.

People will disagree on techniques from time to time but its all about how people react to them and either talk it out or agree to disagree.
Some people just really need to take a chill pill. There will always be keyboard warriors and trolls. The chances of me meeting 99.9% of people on this forum are zero. So they chances of anyone having a personal impact on me are even lower so I try not to get too worked up about what people say on the internet.

This is what you all need.

My favourite beer.
I bought it for obvious reasons.
I rather like it. It's Swedish

For my 2 cents worth...........

Everybody needs to "kiss and makeup"

State you're opinion or suggestion....then move on.

Keep it relevent........

Life's too busy and Life's too short.

I started this business to AVOID stress, not get more of it.

Peace EVERYONE!

Great thread folks. I seen this thread come up yesterday immediately following the deleted thread and thought to myself "here we go". Things got shaky for a while but it gave a lot of people a chance to share their insight of the goings on here. It's also nice to see others that share the same viewpoint as mine. Also, thanks to Martyn for chiming in, giving us his valuable insight as a mod, and letting this run it's course. I consider it almost group therapy. We made some positive progress just in venting a little bit.

anyone else notice that things are getting a little testy around here lately? Lots of name calling, with pizza tech and the new favorite put down - Craigs list -being thrown around. A lot questioning others competence while the OP question gets forgotten.

It doesn't help that there are a lot of end users and "newer" techs joining, which are easy to ignore, but the level of conversation seems to be going down in the last week or so.

Not sure exactly why.

This happens in cycles here. Short bouts of peace followed by periods of discord. Then comes the cleansing fire and we have momentary peace once more.

Guys: I know i'm still a Noob & that, but i've gotta say that apart from the little spats that are going on at the minute. This has to be the BEST FORUM i've ever joined, spent a lot of my time over the last few days since joining just reading over a lot of the questions & answers given. While doing this i've learned a lot ( thaught I already knew a lot) about problems & situations that i've never come across so far & as far as i'm concerned that can only make me better at my job, so from me a BIG thank you to all the Pro Techs on this Forum. Keep up the good work people.

I also wanted to add that while a good amount of the conflicts seem to be due to a new member's action, I think the long term members could do a little bit better in not igniting or stoking the fire. Many times people will come on here for end user support or give indications that they are "pizza" techs. We, as a whole, can either ignore their post altogether or be stoic in our response in telling them our rules and hinting to them that we will not help. Unfortunately, I think some of us are a bit too salty and our patience too short to deal with things in this manner. Sometimes it feels like things are unnecessarily instigated.

I'm one of those "salty" guys you referenced. There was a time when two guys would knock the crap out of each other, get back up, and crack open a 6-pack. They'd forget the whole thing even happened within a few hours. Nobody got their feelings hurt. Those times are gone now except for us "salty" guys. The younger folks here don't understand this mentality because they've been coddled their entire lives. To see what I mean, watch the American Idol tryouts. Nobody ever told those fools that they sucked, so they come out of the audition in tears. People just need to stop being such panty waists. Nyjimbo and I traded a few virtual right hooks some time ago, and there have been other bouts here between the more "salty" members. We get over it by putting a steak on our eye, closing the laptop, and coming back the next day. Bottom line; we get over it, shake hands, and move on. You know; like men; like adults?

I have no issues with the salty people, I actually enjoy it. But if people truly want their to be less tension then one side has to give in...and I doubt someone that's completely new to the community can be the one.

Ahhh, the good ol' days. Male bonding at it's best. I suspect this is what TimJacobs was referring to in his post about respect being earned among this community (by the way, thanks for the call out TJ). I've earned more friends that way in years past. But you're right Geek. It's just not that way anymore. I see it a lot as in person I'm quite outspoken when I see complete disregard for others (happens in the gym a lot). It used to be (or at least still is with older guys) after an initial confrontation, there was mutual respect. But now, the younger folks would rather just turn their back on me or not even remove their earbuds, carry a grudge from then on and assume I'm a cranky old 250lb weightlifter. Anybody who has been here for a while knows I've been involved in a lot of the famous throw downs here. But 5 minutes later, they could post a Mac question (or anything else I could help with) and I'd post a helpful response minus the flames.

That's all well and good being 'tough' but it's against the rules of the forum. We have to have rules of some sort or it becomes unmanageable. It's very simple, ask a well structured question, get valid replies, on topic, don't get personal, give some sort of closure and maybe thanks to the person that helped solve the problem and thanks to the people who also helped. Stick with that and you won't go far wrong Inflamatory remarks are what kicks it all off. Just a word or two out of place and all hell breaks loose. :D

I have my own rule, don't put into print what you wouldn't say to someone's face.

^^^^^^This should be top of the page on the forum rules link. It encompases everything thats' needed condensed for those who cant cope with things longer than a tweet or txt msg.

those hialariously witty, riotously funny, ironic comments seem to lose their humour value as soon as send is pressed :(

Great synopsis - almost a philosophy rather than just rules.
The only problem is with the last one - it really doesn't leave much out!

I go away for 4 months and all hell breaks loose :D

It really doesn't matter how many rules are put in place, this kind of thing is always going to happen. In a few weeks time it will be all forgotten.

Well its nice to have you back! Hopefully everything will calm down now :)

The issue seems not to have rules or not to have rules. I think whats being said is that the rules themselves lack clarity, and are therefore difficult to enforce;

Instead of there being a specific set of guidelines for dealing with problems, most of the work seems to be 'discretionary' which puts the mods in an ambiguous position.

At least I think thats the gist. Martyn, stop me if Im getting this wrong :)
