Teamviewer shift to Subscription Sucks!

Yeah, I just noticed today that Logmein has also doubled up the price for the paid version of LastPass and removed some features from the free version - I missed it because my renewal was a little earlier in the summer. I figure they're probably going to bump the price up once more until they're at the same subscription price level as 1Password of $36/year or $60/year for "family" accounts.

That's why I went with BitWarden, prices are low and if they decide to start jacking things up? I'll just snag the open source docker container and run the thing myself!

why I went with BitWarden

I swapped to the on-prem, containerized version of BitWarden about six months ago and haven't looked back. Upgraded to the Families version for sharing credentials with the wife and kids. I have the container(s) installed on my Synology. Following the instructions here: https://xpenology.com/forum/topic/12455-bitwarden-self-hosted-password-manager-on-docker/.

Moved from LastPass myself as I didn't like where they were headed with changes made last year.

I, personally, don't mind the subscription bit as long as I get access to the newest version. I do however hate the fact that they won't allow us to pay on a monthly basis. Which reminds me... I'm up for renewal next month. >.<;;;

I think their next move is to drop support for older versions. The will add some version checking and just deny older versions and tell you that they are not compatible anymore.

At that point I will look for other options instead of TV.

I just got an offer for TV version 14 for 99.00/year from Teamviewer.

I have emailed them back for clarification on this deal. If it is indeed 99.00 / year then I would be interested. However, I bet its only for the first year and after that they gouge you to death.

I think the true intent is that they want to get me off version 9 as I have a lifetime license for use. They want to get me into the yearly pay deal and then start upping it slowly from here ;)

This is about the 5th offer I have gotten from them in the last 2 months.

That's like my mom's old cell phone on Verizon. I believe at one point all their data plan pricing, etc. was tied to the primary phone and primary line, but she was quite happy with her old flip phone that could barely send plain-text SMS. Every time they'd try to add (at an additional charge) data, she'd call them up and say "Take it off. My phone doesn't use data."

Pretty sure they just kept offering her free phones.

Optus are doing this exact thing to my Mum. At 89 she has little regard for modern tech and barely uses her mobile phone. She was forced to use a "newer" 3G phone when the 2G network was switched off.
But they keep sending her new phones and changing her plan. Her carer (my Sister) just calls them and blasts them to stop.
Doesn't seem to stop them though.

99$ for the first year on a 5 year term then they screw you for the next 4 years or hit you with a huge cancellation fee.

I know a lot of large organizations still relying on TV9

Now they just sent me another email - Offering a "UPTO 300.00" gift card. lol..

Yep. They want me off version 9 pretty bad. Then they can bone me - just like you said.

I also want to add:

Its time to get serious about finding another remote software package. These offers they are handing me are just the "first shot across the bow" so to speak. Once they find they cannot budge me off of version 9 then they will do something underhanded to cancel me out. So, Now is the best time to get going with an alternative as a backup.

So far (cross my fingers) my TV version 11 business license works flawlessly. My host boxes have been set to never update to newer version, so everything seems pretty stable. The new features of 12, 13, and now 14 don't seem to amount to much of anything. And oddly enough, my trial of IT brain still shows alerts from my computers, like they never really turned it off!

I think teamviewer's annual pay plan is not going over too good with a lot of users. I just got their latest bait in my email.

I hope their annual plan crashes and burns a horrible death. Probably not but I do hope so.

They are pretty money hungry. This is what drove me away to other remote tools. Although they do work pretty well.

Yep. I bet the time will come that they email us and tell us:

"As of XXXXXXX teamviewer will no longer support versions below 10".

I dont know when but I bet after they figure out that they cannot get us to bite on their stupid percent off deals.

@ AU$279.95 for version 14 it's not a bad deal. At least it works with any other version without hassles.
I make the cost back after a few sessions and one of the best things with version 14 is that it looks and works the same on Linux as it does in Windows.

The V13 Linux client looked old and outdated and had reduced functionality as well.
The new version (for Linux) is slick, clean and has all the options of the Windoze client.
It even seems to run better.

IMO TV is the best remote software by far and if it means support is stress free for both my clients and me, easy for them to connect and fast even on slow connections - that cost is fine for me.
