Tablet PC shutting down

I just wanted to confirm my suspicions about this tablet PC that I've been working on...

It is a Gateway CX210X which shuts down at different points, even before Windows loads. With the battery removed and plugged in with a new Targus power block (second Targus power block), it can shutdown from startup anytime between 0.5 seconds and 30 seconds, WITHOUT me touching it.

At first, I thought thought the power jack was to blame because I could move the power tip from the Targus around (although the power jack does NOT move and it feels tight still), I could get it to shutdown.

What is your take on this machine? Same results with memory removed, etc.

Thermal protection issue perhaps, have you checked thermal compound on processor? Is cooling fan able to run freely and is filter clear of any build up, is the ram testing ok, try removing the cd/dvd drive to see if the machine will boot to o/s, have you tried booting to bios?
If non of the above then you could try a format and fresh installation if the machine will allow, failing this then possibly a motherboard issue requiring more in depth analysis.

Looking at the CPU, there is a thermal paste pad which does not seem to be as attached to the CPU as I think it should be. In fact, it seems a bit brittle. Can these be replaced just by lifting off the heatsink, replacing the pad, and putting the heatsink back into place?

You should be able to apply new TIM without issue and decrease temps as desired.

Thanks for the help guys...lookin like a mobo issue. Blew out the case, used Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU and video card(?), but doing the same thing...shutdowns anytime from 1 second after startup to 30 seconds or so.

Just a reminder to be careful with AS5 due to the conductive properties.
