Strange file saving issues over a basic network.

I have a client who has a Windows 10 Home computer (Office 2016) and a Windows 7 Pro (Office 2007) computer. The Win7 computer accesses a file share on the Win10 computer called "Office Files".

All of the sudden when he opens a Word/Excel document on the Win7 (client), modifies it then attempts to save it, he gets an error stating the file is open and to please try again later.

Even when you start a brand new Document/Spreadsheet and then go to save it in that share you still get the same error when trying to save a brand new document.

When you hit OK to the error the 'Save As' window pops up and if you try to save it as a new document you again get the same error. If you keep X'ing out of the error and saving after 4-6 tries eventually it will save normally.

The issue does not persist in the host or client computer when saving locally.

I took a couple of screenshots of the open files in the host computer shown below:

Here is what happened when I attempted to save a document that I opened and then modified. You can see that for some reason the host computer is seeing the document open twice ... once in caps and once in lower case.

Here is what happened when I closed the 'file is open, try again' error on the client and attempted to save again and then got another error. Now we have temp files showing up.

After doing this multiple times eventually the document did save as if nothing happened.

I know a good starting place would be to upgrade him to 2016 but if that didn't fix the issue I wouldn't be able to reinstall 2007 for him and he is an older guy so learning newer things is bound to piss him off.

Any ideas here?

Some kind of Windows Explorer shell extension does this.
Or some antivirus software but that's not likely.

You should absolutely update Office, but to solve your immediate issue delete the owner file.

The owner file is located in the same folder as the document that you tried to open. The owner file name uses the following convention: It begins with a tilde (~), followed by a dollar sign ($), followed by the remainder of the document file name. The file name extension is .doc. For example, the owner file for Document.doc is named ~$cument.doc.

Also to prevent issues you need to make sure all the computers are running the same flavor of SMB.

Bit of a noob question but I tried to do some googling to no avail how would I make sure they are both on the same version?

I think W10 runs up to SMB3 but still has SMB2 enabled and in one of the recent updates SMB1 was disabled right?

I think Windows 7 sp1 runs SMB2 by default right?

Do you think one of the updates that disabled SMB1 on W10 could have caused this? I know I can go back in and re-enable SMB through add/remove programs... Maybe I should try that first.

Sounded like an issue releasing file locks.

But either way, it also sounds like even though the problem is solved... they'd "might" be better off not using a workstation as a file sharing machine. Maybe a good 2 bay NAS ?

It's a husband and wife working out of their home ... shes using a $400 HP slimline and hes using a 5-year old Dell. They are cheap as F. Even trying to talk them into paying $70 for 1 user of Office 2016 I got gasps.

Still billed em an hour though.
