Standard VGA Graphics Adapter

Reinstalled Windows 7. In device manager I've got this yellow exclamation next to only one of two "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" items. I click to update the driver but it says the best driver is already installed. How is that possible?

Toshiba has about 50 zillion drivers to choose from, none of which have made this yellow exclamation go away. As usual a very unhelpful driver download site.

From here it looks like there's an nVidia one and an Intel one. Have you tried installing both of those.

Don't try to update the existing display driver as that's the default one when Windows can't find drivers for what's actually in the machine.

I've tried 2 drivers that didn't work. I've dug down further on Toshiba's page to find 3 more Intel drivers that I will try.
Working on 136 Windows updates right now. I always thought that you should install all of the hardware drivers first. I've got PCI Simple Communications Controller, this 2nd display driver and an unknown device remaining.

Surely randomly trying drivers is pointless? Yellow exclamation mark or not, the device should still list its VEN and DEV and once you have those you should be able to find the driver elsewhere rather than having to hunt around Toshiba's site.

I often use a Linux live CD to determine hardware, just run up a terminal and use:
lspci
lsusb
It often provides the exact product number.

Well that GT 540M should be a fairly easy driver. Maybe for Optimus you have to install them in certain order since switchable graphics means you'd need both the Intel and Nvidia driver.

Strangely no mention of Optimus on the Toshiba site.

Will Mint or Ubuntu suffice?

Pretty much any distro should be fine. Ubutnu/Mint will definitely work, I use Xubuntu as my main desktop.

OK for anyone who might be going through the same hell as me in the future... the driver that worked was the oldest Nvidia driver in their massive list with a file name of tc40156200a.exe located here http://support.toshiba.com/support/modelHome?freeText=3025552

I also had to download the Universal Serial Bus Controller driver renesas_usb3_2.1.32.0.7z from http://www.mediafire.com/download/yxc33uau7qmap4x/renesas_usb3_2.1.32.0.7z (click where it says "download 10.37 MB" -- the other download button is some advertisement crap). AFAI can tell Toshiba doesn't even have this driver on their site. Toshiba is the worst. Toshiba makes Dell look like they have their act together, which isn't saying much

Try 3DPChip and 3DPNet

Next time try 3DPChip and 3DPNet. Since we found these two utilities our lives have been sooooo... much easier. It not only identified what the equipment is but also provides the drivers. In 6 months we have only had one occurance that it missed a driver.
