Hello Technibble community.

I have a Sony Vaio, Model: PCG-71312L which was brought in because it won't boot.

Windows 7 hangs
Ran Hiren's in Mini XP Mode - Would not complete boot.
Ran Inquisitor in full mode- would not boot
Ran memtest x86 from hirens- Tested fine
Attempted to boot windows 7 disk - would not boot.

The computer hangs and does not shut down. I've tried different memory in addition to testing the current memory. I removed one of the 2gb cards to ensure that memtest x86 was testing all of the memory.

Any suggestions on where to go from here?

Please tell me you performed other diagnostics. If you are new to laptops then google this sort of problem on the web or at least search this forum. You have a lot of things to try before asking for help. Remember, you are not an end user, you are a technician.

^^^^^^^ Tough Love!!:D

I can't get it to run through any more tests. It won't boot into anything except memtest86, and I've removed the hard drive, disconnected the wireless card, tried an alternative memory card in the other slot, but I get the same result every time. It hangs when booting anything, from disk, or from USB.

Strip it down to just the board, and external (screen), 1 stick of RAM, and the optical drive. Try booting then. You can test the HDD on another computer as well. You still got some things to try here.

Stripped it down. No hard drive, external screen, and only one stick of ram. Everything else is removed. Still won't load any boot disks. Tried with CD, and from flash drive, with CD drive removed. If I had another processor to test in the MOBO I would, but unfortunately, I don't have one laying around.

Make sure the optical drive is being seen as an optical drive in windows. As far as the flash drive, it may be bootable, but does your bios allow booting from usb devices? If not, try replacing optical drive with known good drive, try again.

Speaking of BIOS can you access it? On Sony I believe it is F2 as soon as the VIAO logo pops up. If so try switching to default settings. Also try pulling cmos battery and all power. Press and hold power button this should clear out any settings that may have been jacked up in bios.
If you can not get to BIOS then something may have jacked it up.
How did it get this way? Did the customer try any updates to the bios and they not finish?
