Slow opening "My Computer"

I'm sure we've all had it. You click on "My Computer" and the flashlight comes up for an eternity and finally shows the drives etc.

This one has me stumped:

1. Clean of spyware etc.
2. Unchecked the "search for network drives....."
3. None of the usual HP problems that I can see.
4. Opens fine in safe mode.
5. No CPU spike or service usage showing while the flashlight is showing.

I guess the next approach is to start going through the services and stopping them in batches until I find the culprit.

I'm hoping someone here has an answer or approach.

Thanks.....

Ive seen this happen when there are network drives mounted, but the drive doesnt exist anymore. It spends like 30 seconds trying to find those network drives but fails. So, if there are/were network drives, unmount them.

Try temporarily disabling the Windows Image Acquisition service. If that helps, Google a more permanent solution if the client needs to use a scanner.

So this once...

I also saw once that USB digital camera was trying to use the same drive letter as a network drive. I changed the network drive letter which fixed the problem but it came back after a reboot. Turns out a previous tech had created a .bat file to automatically recreate the network drives from the small business with the same drive letters. I edited the drive letters in the .bat file to permanently resolve the issue. The moral of the story I got was when assigning drive letters to network drives never use early letters in the alphabet. Rather use letters half way down the list or so and you won't ever have to worry about this type of issue.

Good luck, Mark T.
