RAM Install

How much do you charge? It took me about 10 minutes to install + 20 minutes to find online and purchase. Additionally I went to the site.

Geek Squad charges 39.99, which I felt was high considering I marked up the RAM 10%. I charged a fixed price of $29.99 (my hourly rate is $60).

What do you guys charge?

For the installation...unless in a laptop and under the keyboard it takes seconds so usually free installation with part purchase. Wish it wasn't so but sometimes the area in which you live dictates charging schemes.

Best of both worlds.

I have a higer markup on ram and price it as RAM with installation. I or quote it as Ram with installation. I am able to do this because the majority of my ram installs are done when I recomend the upgrade rather than having this listed as a service offered. Very few people come in asking to upgrade their ram. Rather they come in because their computer is slow.

Example: Ram costs $15.00 but the charge is $45.00. The client is happy because they just purchased ram and it was installed for them. (A bit highter than if they bought it on their own but this covers any identifying the type. sourcing, shipping if I have to special order, etc.

If they want just memory I still sell it at $45.00 because I am not a retailer per say and if they are coming to me I am still not that much higher than a retailer. Most assume higher prices on components from shops rather than big box stores.

My form has a $25 fee for install. When I do the actual install for a client I will often strike out that price and lower it as needed. Nobody ever complains when I strike it out and if I dont they accept it as the normal price.

On Friday I did a 2 gig upgrade for a favored clients daughters laptop and crossed out the $25 and made the install price $0. They loved me. But the form will still say $25 so I can charge that much if needed for the next client.

My minimum fee for anything is $35. So if they want me to install RAM and leave, or anything that's 20 minutes or less, its $35. I will usually try and stay for an hour though and do tune-up stuff so I can get the full $75 for an hour.

lol you are a true business man.

Since I'm only doing house calls it's $24.99 for install + $0 house call fee (If local...if long distance fee is $25). As ComputerClinic said however I will try my hardest to sell my "Computer Opimization" or "Computer Tune-Up" service.

My computer tune-up service is basically cleaning all junk files, defrag, installing service packs, and updating anti-virus/spyware software. - $49.99

My Optimization service involves all of the above plus removing junk software, removing dust bunnies from the computer and setting up the page-file & cache according to the customers system specs. - $74.99

Pretty much the same as this
Memory is cost +15% markup (using mostly Crucial)
Install of memory is $20.
And I agree that no one asks for more memory, usually I have done a "tune up" service for $50 and recommended the ram upgrade, so it is value-added.

I usualy do this as part of the job so I don't charge anything really, sometimes it may mean a 40 minute £25 job takes 60 minutes so it becomes a £30 job. I usualy charge trade prices for RAM but will round it up a little bit. If I pay £11 for a stick of 1GB DDR2 I will charge £15 which is way below retail price at most places.

We usually leave Ram prices at our cost and charge an hour installation which includes PC tune up, updates etc... These are mostly small businesses or if residential (owners of the Businesses). Had no complaints about price and they love the quick usually same day service !!:D

Whats your reasoning behind being so cheap? Is it really competitive in your area?

Yes even next door to me are a PC repair business  They do mainly B2B but now doing some stuff too. They are more expensive than me but they have IS09000 and a million other things.

There is also a lot of asian areas which have shops which do everything from PC repair to flights to Pakistan, these places are stupidly cheap but I don't think they are serious competition. In some areas of my city nearly every shop is doing 'PC repair'.

I am getting to the point now though where I am not going to compete with those guys. The problem is I am not as good as some guys on here but I am a lot better than the Format C: pizza tech brigade.

I doubt many people know was ISO9000 is?

I am not even that sure, I thought it was some sort of management process? Totally unrelated to computing?

Yep I have a bedroom they have a nice office. What is worse is that they keep putting a flyer through my door every week :(. The only reason it has not killed my business is I have been doing it for four years and have built up a lot of clients.

I've also become very well known in the next suburb so I get a lot of jobs there too. For what it is worth I don't think they know how to handle domestic clients from what I have been told. They are really B2B but now have a great big sign "Computer Clinic" on their front :( It is an office more than a shop.

Also they are more expensive than I am and people will just see their flashy car and think I am not paying towards that. I am cheaper but do the same quality of job, because I don't have flashy leases to pay for.

You might want to look into guerrilla warfa...advertising. Since you're so close to them you will receive almost all of their advertisements and thus know what they're doing right and wrong and then just apply it to your own advertisement with some personal modifications.

Which is sort of my plan :) For now though just going to do a leaflet drop of my existing leaflets in my very local area e.g their catchment area.

Don't you guys run a full memtest for one full pass after a ram install??? I know time is money but wouldn't you want to guarantee a perfect install?

Ex. proper bus speed, proper CAS etc. 0 errors?
