RAM Install

I use Corsair and Kingston stuff since using that stuff never had any RAM errors or symptons of faulty RAM. If all RAM installations were done on a bech then yes I could easily do a RAM test but most my RAM installs are on site and the customers wants to use the computer the second I have gone, not 12 hours later.

I always do a one pass memory test unless like you said, the customer wants it right then.

Sometimes when a customer walks in and really wants to walk away right after the upgrade, I can do a quick 3 minute memtest and tell them I am just finalizing the install. It's just so I can sleep better. I don't need these douchebags coming in a couple days later with ram issues because they didnt want to sit down for 10 minutes when I did the initial install.

What would you recomend for that? I suppose if I do a quick scan I could also justify charging £5 more per install :) I usualy use MEMtest 86 but its slow :(.

I do use memtest86+. It's all about how you handle the customer. I install the memory, start the machine bootup and pop in the CD. I tell them "Ok, now when the machine boots this CD will finalize the memory installation, it's only going to take 1 or 2 minutes but we have to wait for it to finish".

Of course when its running I just blah, blah, blah them and if I dont see a red line or red screen after a couple minutes then it's almost always ok. I can usually drag it out for 5 minutes if I want to and customers always want to ask questions.

Remember, you are MUCH smarter than your client. Every tech needs to use that, not to rip them off, but to make their job easier.

I just want to reply directly to the guy talking about the "Computer Clinic" sign...I think you need a sign too, one that says "The Doctor Is In" so maybe you snag a few of their clients since it sounds like you were first...then again the circumstances are certainly not typical though so...eh. :D
