Printers that WILL work with Vista

Had a call from my mom. I am her computer guy. Her HP printer died.Would not print from ant software.
Checked USb cable and power cable-both tested ok.
Reloaded the latest HP Solutions software and all updates for printer.
Still does not print.
Checked the internet and found lots of problems with VISTA and HP printers.
Are ther any printer brands that will work out of the box with HP?
I have suggested upgrading to WIN 7 or would a downgrade to WIN XP be better.
I do not want to buy a new printer and then have more software issues with VISTA.

Vista works well with printers... it plays just about as nicely as Windows 7. The only difference is that 7 might have a slightly newer, more up-to-date driver-information-database.

If it worked before and quit it just goes to show that the printer you have is compatible.

There is nothing wrong with HP printers and Vista/XP/7... They all play together nicely.

The upgrade from Vista to 7 is hardly worth it depending on what new features you want. The rollback from Vista to XP is crazy talk. Vista is much better than Windows XP.

Yeah, I know Vista had a very rough start... It was a lemon, but with SP2, they made lemonade. Really, Microsoft fixed the problems with Vista though there are a lot of annoyances to turn off like that damn side-bar.

Try checking windows update.

Helped a librarian... She was besides herself. She got under her desk moved her computer out of the way and cleaned up a bit then the computer wouldn't turn on.

She was frantic... I explained she had the surge protector plugged into itself.

Thanks for the suggestions:
Installed latest VISTA Service Packs-no change
Upgraded to Win 7-no change-printer still does not print.
Tested printer on laptop with WIN XP-prints ok-so not a dead printer or cable.
I need to install latest WIN 7 updates.

Any more suggestions ?

You're not giving us much to work with. Throw a few more crumbs out here . . .

What model printer?

Does the HP software see the printer?

Does it appear in the Vista printers list?

Any error messages when you try to print?

Do the jobs appear (and/or disappear) in the print queue?

Have you tried a different USB port?

Any errors in the system logs?

Is the print spooler running?

Can you print/create anything from the Windows print dialog (like create a PDF)?
