Please help ASAP. need to burn files on cd, 0mb used/0mb free and its a new disk.

All i have to do is back up some pictures and documents to a blank DVD disk so I can do a fresh XP install, I insert the disk to the dvd writer and it reads it and ask me how I want to burn the DVD I chose open folder and it will not let me drag and drop anything, when I checked it, it indicated that the disk had 0mb used and 0mb free I have tried this with 3 different brands of disk's thinking that might do it but still nothing please help.

Are you trying to burn a dvd with Window's built in cd burning thing? If so, try using a program like Nero or whatever you have. I don't think XP has the ability to burn DVDs natively..though I may be wrong.

XP does in fact not have the capability to natively burn DVD disks. You'll need to download a free DVD burning software such as BurnAware, or one of many others.

XP does not do drag and drop DVD burning with out the use of a 3rd party application. I think Nero has one and I know Roxio has one so if you are running either of those look into thier drag-n-drop features. Worst case is just open your DVD burning software and burn it though that and forget the drag-n-drop for now.

I come across the exact same situation not that long ago.
A customer purchased a stack of DVD-R's and it gave the same thing you are seeing.
It turned out the PC she is burning from has a DVD+R/RW burner and it doesn't accept DVD-R/RW disks
I put in a blank DVD+R and it worked fine.

Try both a blank DVD+ and a DVD-, one of them should work.

I had a similar problem trying to use CD-RW discs with my dvd burner. The burn process would appear to be normal but then when finished it just couldn't read anything on them. I stick to CD/DVD-R discs now and they work fine.

Yeah, its sounds like he is trying to use windows XP native "CD" burner to burn to a "DVD" but windows XP only does "CD" burning OOB. You have to get a third party DVD burning software. Vista does have "DVD" burning though.

Has the Vista built in DVD burning software been fixed? I tried it over the summer and it was beyond terrible. In the display it kept adding to the time left until it said something like "1 day 3 hours remaining..." I'm not kidding! I decided to let it run to see what would happen and got a hard lockup after an hour or so. And of course, I ended up with a coaster. That was the last time I tried it.

just a thought if your still havin trouble

If you have or can purchase or even borrow a thumb drive...as long as it is big enough to hold the data it should be quicker than resolving the dvd problem.

Could be a bad batch of discs. This happens more than you'd think.

Check to make sure that CD writing is enabled and that the region code is set properly
