pi-hole any downsides to using it

It works well. The only issues I had with it were things to be expected. For example, if the Pi Hole sucks up something by mistake or if a site's loading or function hinges on showing you the 'holed' content. If you have a problem with ABP on a site, expect to have the same issue on the Pi Hole.

I use in in an Ubuntu Server VM for our office. Overall it works great, I use uBlock Origin on top at the endpoint as well. The issue I have with it is it can sometimes be hard to get whitelisted items to actually work. I typically have to restart the VM in order to get it to work, however it's very rare that I need to whitelist anything.

I have pi-hole and PiVPN running on a Pi B2 since the beginning of the year and it has been excellent. It is so noticeable when I'm on a client's machine without it!

For a quick change to bypass the pi-hole, I have a different network profile set up with external DNS, but its very rarely necessary – it usually just confirms that a website has its own problems, not caused by the pi-hole.

Highly recommended.

I've been using pihole at home on a raspi 2 for a while now (over a year?). I echo the same thing as others: occasional blockage of unintended sites, but generally awesome.

Be careful adding more block lists, as you will virtually guarantee excessive blocks, but 'out of the box' works pretty well.
