Newer Laptop Design Irritations

What are you charging to do this?

I put the old drives in a $10 case and charge 20-25 and show them how to use Macrium Reflect.

LOL. I know the question wasn't directed at me but I thought I'd comment. My external hard drive enclosures cost me $5 and I charge $14.99. Guess I need to up my pricing on that.

Which one are you using?

For most clients, 2.0 is fine. They don't back up frequently and they don't have a large amount of data to back up anyway. For the clients that do need a faster enclosure, I use these:

And I charge $10 more ($24.99). I'd say I sell the 2.0 version about 90% of the time.

I always use the 3.0 versions. Currently have 2 of these on hand.

I've tried those but I didn't like them as much as the Inland 3.0 above. For one I don't like the fact that it has a switch on it. I just know I'll get a bunch of angry calls from past clients saying that the external hard drive I sold them "doesn't work" because the switch is in the off position. A lot of my clients are older and completely computer illiterate. They have maybe 10GB to 20GB of data and back it up once a month or so. They don't need a 3.0 enclosure, and having an on/off switch would just be an inconvenience for everyone involved.

I setup a new laptop the other day where the power button was also a fingerprint reader?!?

10 "Enter your password".....
20 "Hey, the laptop turned off!"
30 Turn it back on
40 Goto 10

Oh yea... that's another one. Another thread reminded me of this one...

They are making the model and/or serial numbers smaller and smaller and harder for my poor eyes to read. I almost always need a magnifying glass or use my magnifier app on my phone to read some of that tiny print.

We also use to scan these numbers in, but now that most are tucked away under the battery in a place that isn't flat and usually dark in color, we've had issues getting any scanner to read them now.

Or else they use a silver font on a white sticker or a gray font on a silver case. Love that!

How about this lovely design? Pictured is the inside of a Lenovo laptop dropped off to "speed it up". Client says it's almost brand new, doesn't understand why it isn't flying. I put a bargain basement SSD in there and it's much improved, but really, how cheap is this? If they charged more than $300 for this thing brand new that was a rip off!

LOL. I have a few computers like this that I keep to show clients. Most of them are mortified by what they see. They're really only getting about 1/2 a laptop for $300+ and it's a cheapo POS.
