New AVG 2011

New versions, yay! :D

Personally, I think AVG had fallen from grace with version 9. But I may give them a second chance and give AVG's new version (2011) a test run in a VM. Early reviews seem to be fairly positive.

You beat me to it lol :-P

--- Did you notice that it went from ~90 MB to ~135 MB ? :O
It's one bloated cow !

I see it offers antirootkit protection now and protection while on social networks...

- I'd like to know how much cpu/ram it uses and have it compared to other AVs.
Personally I use and recommend Avast 5

Right at 2MB on idle between the 2 processes in my Windows 7 VM right now. Full scan uses 7-9MB on a full scan across 4 processes. Pretty lightweight on RAM. To get a good idea of how it bogs down (or doesn't) the CPU, I'll load it on a physical machine tomorrow and give it a go.

it doesn't play well with others... will not install if msse is installed.

That's a good thing. All the AV software should do this.

The fact that it used to let you install it with another AV (which I ran into this situation the other day ago) is silly.

Ah, I miss the good old days of clean light weight software. You could download a 5mb program that would do damn near everything except bring you breakfast in bed. ( for that you needed the 8mb version ) I know I'm old because I can remember when photo-shop fit on a single CD.

We will look back at this in a few years and be like: Wow that AV program was only 135mb. My new version comes on a blu-ray disc.

Also note they have a 32bit and a 64 bit installer now.

I have 2 major issues with it:

#1
The Resident Shield - File Exclude - "Add List" feature was removed.
I use this feature to exclude MBAM on several installations daily.
This no longer works in AVG 2011 and it is an inconvenience to me

Having to add these one by one using file explorer file picker is a major inconvenience.

#2
Win7 Pro 64bit, 6G ram, Intel i7 950, 128G SSD drive.

Had AVG free 9.0.856

Installed avg_free_x64_all_2011_1120a3152.exe
---------------------

Why does the 64 bit version install to Program Files (x86)??
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG10\

Install failed uninstalling AVG 9 with error:

Tried again:
--------------
uninstalled AVG 9 from program uninstall menu
Installed 2011
computer froze up after it installed and was updating.
Had to reboot.
no avg icon in tray
no uninstall avg icon in "uninstall programs"
open avg icon on desktop and get error "key is not activated"

Try to reinstall again to see if it can repair itself:
----------------
Product: AVG 2011 -- Error 1921. Service 'AVG WatchDog' (avgwd) could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services.

had to restore the whole system with last nights Acronis backup.

Back to AVG 9 indefinitely, or try Avast?
