As discussed in this thread, I recently installed CarPlay in my Mazda-3 only to find out that I need IOS12 on my cell and the IPhone5 that I currently own only updates to IOS 10.x.
So, I am in the market for a new cellphone.
My cell provider has offered me a deal on both an Iphone 8 and Iphone 10.
Two of my main concerns about the IPhoneX
  1. Being able to mount the phone via magnet to a car vent using something like this that I already own.
  2. Keep the cell in a belt holster something like this when I am at clients, etc.
Is anyone using their IPhoneX with these accessories and how well do they work?
Thank you in advance.

I bought the clip you mentioned in item 1. back when we were having another discussion about it. Worked great with a 4 and 5. But when I got 6 to replace my 4 the weight was too much. Since the 10 appears to be larger I'd expect the same problem. Certainly when this is added.

I also used the holster you posted, or a close copy, and it worked great. But not if it was in a case.

I've ended up going in another direction this. Since I bought the battery case I just use it as it is. Wear cargo pants so it just goes in a side pocket.

Thank you for the input @Markverhyden.
Part of my problem is that the 'touch' factor of the infotainment system in my Mazda-3 becomes disabled when the car is in motion.
As a result, I will not be able to 'touch' the Waze (GPS) on the infortainment system while I am driving.
So, I wanted the cell easily visible and within reach.
Otherwise, I have no clue how the car's built in infotainment system's buttons are going to interact with Waze.

Edited:
These state that they work with IphoneX.

I have the best solution. The best I say!

In your Mazda 3, press at the same time - Star button (Favorites), Mute and Music... this brings up the test screen.

On the touchscreen press the 'DEL' button for 20 seconds - Test mode shows in the Right Pane.

Then type in 11 and press enter....

You will be given a "Run Script" menu.. select "SPEED TOGGLE" and you can now have touch while driving!

Pardon my English .... Huh?
I won't ask you where you found that?!
Soooo many questions:
Is that valid for a 2014 Mazda-3?
Will that work with CarPlay?
Will I have to do that everytime that I start her up?
Do you have a Mazda-3?

No, I don't have a Mazda 3.. but I frequent and participate in organized National Autocross events... so I get to see a bunch of car nuts and their cars... I am a car guy myself.

So, on a 2014 I think I'm giving you the correct instructions. On newer models (IIRC, 2017-18) it is made harder because you have to pull out the computer behind the glovebox and connect with a serial cable (Not hard for us computer guys, eh?) and issue a few commands, but nothing crazy or hard.

The "change" or toggle is permanent from power-offs - You can change it back by following the instructions again.. so no, you do not have to do it all the time or every time you start the car. No, it will not brick your system.

I have heard that some Mazda's simply take a thumbdrive with a "special file" on it... the car starts and looks for this special file and executes it on power-up..

Does this invalidate my insurance?

(Bypassing a safety feature is a bit of a no-no, you know!)

There is not a law, I don't believe, that says touch screens must be deactivated during driving.. it's a manufacturer-made decision. Certainly check you locality and its laws. In any event, they would need to prove that you were using, and distracted, by the system... otherwise, everyone with a cell phone IN A CAR, in an accident, would be held liable for their phone, regardless of if they were using it or not...

Here's a (2018)random Lawyer's site that has an article about in-car systems and their distractions, inferring that there is no law for such a thing.

Safety is important yes, however, the Nanny State is strong and people are stupid.

1. Nothing is stopping them from using their phone which is much worse than an in-dash system.
2. Nothing is stopping anyone from mounting TV's or Laptops in their car, mounts and DVD head units are readily available.

3. AND HERE'S MY BIGGEST GRIPE.... OK, so, we used to have these things called "Radios" and "Air conditioners" where there were a myriad of buttons and controls... were we NOT reaching for those in the middle of the dash for the last 60 years? So what's the difference?
[/RANT]

The entire industry misses the point of the problem. The problem isn't if the screen is enabled or not while you are driving, it's a three-fold problem having to do with anything but...

1. The interfaces are stupid, bloated and overly burdensome, seemingly to be "futuristic". Fix that, and half the problem goes away.
2. Only CERTAIN THINGS should be disabled, not the entire screen. If I, or the passenger wants to change the Music Track or other "one press" things, then let me do it... If Waze or some other "long input" action is needed, OK, fine, disable it.

And last, but not least... It's up to the driver. Period.
Make good decisions and have a good drive. Make bad decisions and have an accident or get lucky. Disabling the infotainment system isn't going to stop any of it... as evidenced by the OP, case in point... Now he's going to have to mount a tiny screen, clunkily dangling from an AC vent - which one is safer again?

All of these things are safe: Phones, Touchscreens in cars, old "Analog" dash buttons - it's the person using it at an IMPROPER TIME that is inherently the problem. If you are driving, your job is TO DRIVE. That's it. Law and regulation should treat these things as such.. a "people" problem.

Almost everyday I avoid an accident (And I have never caused or been in one) because someone isn't paying attention or otherwise "can't drive" - technology or not. Nobody is out here pulling them over and taking their licenses away or even requiring a rigorous "drive test" at the DMV. It's a written "sign test". The result of the "class" of driver around here due to poor education and lack of useful "reviews" of drivers before being handed their license, is apparent. That's not a problem?

So ya, be safe, activate your Infotainment system and roll on!

Having thought about it some more; I think that I am still going to have to use a phone mount and cell at visible/easy to reach level.

Here is my scenario:
My voip service provider is RingCentral.
They have an app for IOS but it is not CarPlay compatible.
The app also does not have voice command.
The problem is that I use the RingCentral app to make outgoing calls while driving.
There are two reasons:

1 I want all phone outgoing calls to use my office phone #/name as the ID.
IOW, my clients do not know my cell #.
This way I do not need to fiddle with call forwarding on/off on my cell because it is powered-off when I am in the office in order save battery life

2 Since all calls are processed by RingCentral, I have one centralized and easy location to review call logs.

All magic is appreciated!

Your welcome @allanc. As I mentioned what I experienced is a weight issue. If I used it in a vent with horizontal vanes they would just tilt down as I road over bumps. Vertical vanes and the mount itself would tilt down.

Got a Kia for a rental and it appears to have Car Play. So I'll see what it does today with Waze.

Besides it looks like @phaZed might have solved part of the equation.

Unfortunately @phaZed , that did not work for me.
When I press the 'del' key its colour changes from black to a light orange.
Then, about 20 seconds later, it changes back to black but the phrase 'test mode' does not appear anywhere on the screen.
I can press '11' and a status window displays something similar to 'invalid' and the 'ENTER' key is disabled.
Thank you for trying.

On this Kia I can access Waze just fine. iPhone 6s iOS 12.1.2. I loose the ability to type a search as soon as it’s not in park, movement apparently does not matter. I can enable voice recognition, only messed with it a short while, but if activated from Waze on the iPhone it did come and and completed a search. And I'm pretty certain I did it when I was in gear.

Tks for the info.
With my current setup, Waze always miisunderstands my voice command.
It was initiated either via 'OK Waze' (or whatever it is) or I think also a three finger tap on the cell screen.
Drove me nuts, so I gave up.
Also, if I remember correctly - I do not think that 'Hey Siri' and 'OK Waze' played well in the same sandbox.
But again, that combo is a IPhone5, IOS 10.x and a Mazda-3.
The Mazda-3 is known to not have a quiet interior.
There were too many variables so again I gave up trying to diagnosis the issues.

With my current scenario, without CarPlay, I can do whatever I want with Waze regardless of the park on/off, movement, etc.

I suppose, I am going to try everything very slowly when I get my new Iphone

What I saw indicated that it was either Siri or waze voice, not both. Might mess around with it some more tomorrow. Just me and my Dad this Christmas.

I look forward to your update.
Now that you mentioned it; I think that you are correct.
It was one or the other in the sandbox.
Siri definitely has her uses for me (e.g. text messages and Email).
So, it looks like we have come back to the beginning where I will need a reliable mount on an air vent and a case that can accommodate a magnet.
Then finding a holster will probably be an issue.
