Hi all...I am needing to put together a quote for migrating an existing Windows Server Small Business (fe) server With Exchange 2007 to Windows 2012 server on new hardware.

I have not had to price out what Windows Server 2012 Standard with 20 - 25 licenses would cost before and want to make sure I am getting it right. Plus the labor to do the migration.

At this point I am thinking

Server 2012 $865

20 CAL $215.00 x 4 ($860)

Total Server Software Cost $1725 Possibly 25 Licenses at $1940

Does this cost sound correct?

Yeah you're pretty much right on average MSRP for 2012 Standard license.
A wee high for the CALs..but hey close enough....you gotta make something and your server license price isn't leaving much profit.

Add the bare metal to run her on? Or sticking into existing hypervisor host?

The fun begin at tossing numbers around for the migration itself..depending on the office and complexity of things...and assuming you're moving to O365 for e-mail? Could be from 4-7 grand...for labor/consulting time.

The currently have a Dell Tower Server set up in a room that I am sure was a closet. I would like to switch to a RackMount system with a lockable and self cooled cabinet. I think I have found some options at around the $250 to $350 rate for used ones...

I do need a recommendation for a good rackmount server unit for Server 2012 Standard and approximately 15 Users that will grow to around 25 likely over the next 12 to 18 months...:D

As to the migration labor I was guestimating about 60 hours?? Was just going to guestimate the hours it should take to migrate and clean up and charge the rate we have on the SLA which is extremely low $22.50, really need to negotiate at least $35 ot $40 on this particular project I think...what do you think?

Sorry for the second post but thought adding a bit more info may be helpful...

Currently have SLA $205 a month for GFI on Server and 15 workstation. Includes consultation and limited free remote support (standard maintenance issues) Regular business hours on-site or out of scope remote issues are billed at $22.50 an hour 1 hour minimum and Weekend or after hours are $35 per hour 1 hour minimum. Non-emergency issue response 8 to 24 hour response emergency response 3 hours.

I've been thrust into a situation where they were within days of a full network explosion. Currently I am having to constantly work at keeping 3b to 5Gb free on this Small Business 2008 server. When it was installed around 5 years or so ago the main partition was only given 60Gb and of course with all of the updates etc Windows has grown to use up almost all of that space. I have two choices at the moment, keep them at the critical level where they are and force a server software and hardware upgrade like I am or steel some space from their network drive partition which currently only has about 35Gb free to add to the C: partition and let them run until that extra is gone too...so I am forcing the expenditure for the upgrade as it is critical that they do it or they are going to be in real trouble within months any way...

The reason I was initially called in was that they were hit with the Cryptolocker virus as they had a hodgepodge of different free antiviruses on all of their workstation of course not all updated. The IT person they had before me was supposed to have the network drive backed up on Carbonite but had allowed it to laps so that backup was not available when crypto hit and traveled through their network drive +... I am using Livedrive (My reseller account) now and have the server, network drive and all workstations backing up to it.

The part about the moving to 365 for email. They currently have Exchange 2007. With the 365 not really being an open option would you recommend I try to push the exchange upgrade too? Going to put that on one of the VM's available with standard...I couldn't seem to find a solid price on exchange or how licensing works with the new exchange. Any advice or solid information links for the Exchange issue?

I'm assuming they're currently on SBS08....which has integrated exchange.
If you're replacing SBS08 with Server Standard 2012....what would you do for Exchange? Or e-mail? You can't peel out the Exchange 07 part of the SBS install and bring it over to the new Server 2012 box.

A good reason for me to have come in here :D

I am extremely rusty in this aspect of things, not to mention things are a lot different these days.

I had either forgotten or just didn't know that Exchange was integrated into SBS 2008.

The price I am seeing for the Exchange 2013 Server software I can sell for around $849 and around $79 per CAL does this sound about right?

I suppose another option is to leave the current SBS 2008 online to run the exchange until they decide to upgrade that aspect as well, that would get rid of the bottle neck that is happening now with the current setup?
