I think striking the balance is the problem - decent customers usually know when you've gone the extra mile for them and it's how you deal with those that push it too far that counts.
I had a customer this mornng who called me and after a while, I said I was with a customer but they stayed on the line until I said that I had to go!
Having said that, they are a good customer who have got me work with the rest of their family, so I guess you need to take every case on its merits as I don't believe that there's a one-size-fits-all in this situation.
