My New Rule

I think striking the balance is the problem - decent customers usually know when you've gone the extra mile for them and it's how you deal with those that push it too far that counts.

I had a customer this mornng who called me and after a while, I said I was with a customer but they stayed on the line until I said that I had to go!

Having said that, they are a good customer who have got me work with the rest of their family, so I guess you need to take every case on its merits as I don't believe that there's a one-size-fits-all in this situation.

We tried having a lunch/soda fund for the 5-10 minute jobs. I cannot believe how often someone would leave 2 or 3 DOLLARS. I made better tips bartending. I have been tempted to chase after them, give the money back and say, "Obviously, you need this more than I do."

Sometimes pays to be nice. A few times I have been tipped $20 for power cycling the laptop or finding out their desktop power cord is the issue. Not gonna charge for that...though maybe I should start. If I'm on site one hour minimum though!
