I challenge everyone here to pick one day in September to go old school! "But what does that mean Dr. Geek?" Well class, it means don't turn on the computer, don't turn on the TV, leave your cell phones at home, and go outside and do something with your family, significant other, or by yourself. Just force yourself to go disconnected for a single 24-hour period. I know you'll have excuses, and I don't care. Just do it. I promise you'll feel better. My day is September 18th. What's yours?

I appreciate the sentiment but it's not happening. My cell phone is my business line to my customers. Without customers getting immediate/prompt replies, I can't afford to spend time with my wife or keep a roof over our heads. It's a sacrifice I make.
I already barely watch TV (maybe one show a day) as we got rid of cable a few years ago.

I don't appreciate your accusation of "excuses". It's not an excuse if I have no intent of doing it.

It's your agenda, not mine (or anybody else's, necessarily). Enjoy your disconnected day.

Edit: Pick a day to go without food or water. What? You won't? Excuses!

@eHousecalls.ca. No offense, but why did you even bother replying to this thread? If it doesn't interest you, then leave it alone. If you're just trying to make yourself feel superior, then I truly hope you achieved your goal.

As for the Tapatalk reference, it's a good app that I received free from the devs. I don't mind giving them a little bump.

we do this occasionally.
the only one that really suffers is me.
I go through withdrawal.
But we have a good time.

as for the customers? meh.

I only have 2 that try to contact me on the weekend. as long as it's not tax season they don't worry if I don't get back right away.

I find your suggestion bizarre, wrong-headed and distressing.

I would no sooner switch off my electronics for a day than cut off any of my other appendages (fingers, arms, legs, etc).

Actually is there an option just to do that instead? If so I'll take that option. :P

Come on, man. You can do it!

My only "excuse" about keeping my phone with me is that I use it for geocaching. I'll find somewhere to hike or generally be outside, but I need my phone or handheld gps to get me to where I need to be.

But....it's ok, because generally I won't get any calls or even have cell signal some of the places I go.

I do it quite often to be honest. Feels good not to be tied to all the electronics. I actually do take the cell phone for emergency purposes if I travel, but its turned off :)

As I see it, you only started this thread to laud your disconnected day over others. "I'm disconnecting for a day! Look at me! You should try to be like me!"

To quote, "If you're just trying to make yourself feel superior, then I truly hope you achieved your goal. " Right backatcha.

You took offence because someone didn't like your idea. Get over it. If you only wanted positive replies, post it to your own site and turn off commenting. Because I have no interest in playing the saint and going without for a day doesn't mean I have to forfeit the right (well, privilege as TN is not my site) to opine.

Edit: I never said it was a bad idea. If you can, great. Don't push it as an agenda and get smug calling "Excuses" for those that choose not to participate in your idea.

I don’t hear my mechanic telling all of his buddies to not drive their vehicles for a day.

As a technology professional I am constantly encouraging my clients to find ways to use technology to be more productive and entertained. Thus, I drink my own Kool-Aid and do the same. What would a day without technology get me? No way to communicate with my friends and family, no news, no weather, and diminished fun. Sounds like a day of isolation and chores around the house to pass the time. I’ll pass, but you enjoy your day.

No IT for an entire day ?
I couldn't do it. I would go insane.

Yes, it is an addiction.

But think of the collateral damage.

No IT for my 13 yr daughter ? Phone ? BBM ?

My life would be hell for weeks to come.

Almost worth it though :)

Regards.

I can appreciate both sides of the technology thing. Can recall when hi-tech was a drop light from the ceiling and a long handled water pump. Because of that I always figured I was tough on doing without. But nine days with no power after Katrina left me with a new appreciation for technology. At this point I've had four years of an intensely ambivalent relationship with computers; the technology fascinates me but I bitterly despise much of the use to which it's being put. We just have to try to stay on the right end of the dog leash.

I'm constantly reminded no matter where you go, there is always at least one person hell-bent on being miserable and attempting to make others feel the same.

This was merely an idea that was passed to me by a friend. I thought I would share it with the rest of the community here. No attempt to make myself feel good or important. I thought I suggested it with a bit of levity, though some don't see it that way. If you want to try it, great! If not, no big deal. I know a lot of us here are workaholics. I have three techs working for me now, and I still manage to put in 60 to 80 hours a week. I feel it's important to take a break now and then to avoid burnout. That's why I thought this was a great idea when I heard it.

Now, if I offended or hurt anyone's feelings, I sincerely apologize. I'm getting a little verklempt now. Talk amongst yourselves. And for crying out loud, smile and have a giggle.

Do you think you may be taking all of this just a tad too seriously?

Loring....Great post....I won't pick one day because I try to actually do a few here and there....

To me no customer is that important that they could not go 24 hours without you jumping for them. Only customers that deserve to know what I am doing is my business customers, so to them I actually give them a heads up with a simple email "going away on such and such day and will return following day "IF" emergency contact me otherwise it will wait ;)

I get replies back saying have a great time etc....

"Tomorrow is not guaranteed"
