Mission for everyone here!

Loring....Great post....I won't pick one day because I try to actually do a few here and there....

To me no customer is that important that they could not go 24 hours without you jumping for them. Only customers that deserve to know what I am doing is my business customers, so to them I actually give them a heads up with a simple email "going away on such and such day and will return following day "IF" emergency contact me otherwise it will wait ;)

I get replies back saying have a great time etc....

"Tomorrow is not guaranteed"

True, true...

I'm in!

Sept 18th works for me, my calendar is open.

So this is no tv, no phone, no computer, no radio? I will plan a home soft remodel day with the family. My fam is not really outdoorsy types, but they are the type to come over and help paint, bbq and just do stuff here. My house is the "family home" and that's a great day to get the fall cleaning done and work in the garage, spray the house, etc.

My brother and I are also doing a bunch of stuff in our basement so maybe we will try to make that the day we lay carpet tiles. I am excited to get that done, I can give a whole day for that.

Good post.

Try and keep on topic please.

If you have nothing useful to say; then save yourself the time by not replying.

Else this thread will be sent to the graveyard.
You'll need to define "useful" in the forum rules (the Rules page, not here). There's nothing in there saying you need to agree with the OP, not even hinting at it. There's only one line about "adding to the discussion value of the thread" - I expressed why I thought it was a bad idea and why it wouldn't work for me. That's called "discussion".

The post above me is a good example of why you need to take a break now and then. Who wants to wind up like that?

Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk while laughing at those with absolutely no sense of humor.

Since Hurricane Irene left me without power at my house, a low-tech day was forced upon me. I still walked the dog like normal, went outside to clean up fallen branches, went to the gym to take a shower, and went to the store to pick up something I could grill.

I would say the only thing really unusual was that I now had time to read "Built to Sell". I knew it was a great book and it's been sitting at my house for a few weeks now and yesterday seemed like a good fit to help pass the time. Fantastic book and I encourage anyone who doesn't want to do tech work for the rest of their life to read it.

So how do I feel about the low-tech day? Did it inspire me to unplug more often and get away from it all? I already spend a lot of time away from the computer so my answer is "eh".

Re:

Easy! September 5th for me. :)

I really enjoy disconnecting from all the tech stuff for one day, and spend some quality time with my wife, dog and family or just sleeping in, since I rarely do it anyway. What I enjoy the most is going back to it fully recharged.

I like this challenge!

My challenge day is now a 2 day event. Labor day (invited the family over for bbq and basement clear out so we can remodel over the winter)...and Sept 18th to finish. I know they will be slow and I will be drunk, so not much will get done on Labor day. lol

And it pushed me to get my brother who moved in with me to get him to do more soft remodeling around the house. He pulled down all the crappy ugly 1980's fake brick backing around the counters and sink and is doing a tile job.

yay for this post!

One day without the techy stuff? man, I just did three, and that's not unusual in Africa believe me. I did a network maintenance call to a friend who runs a Wild Game Lodge 900km from my base, up near the Namibian/Angola border. I do this ocassionally for him more as a favour, but also because he gives me free accommodation and we go 4x4 trailing and big-game viewing afterwards, and you know folks, it's GREAT to get into the bush and enjoy the experience of being responsible for yourself 100% when even if you had a mobile phone or a netbook or whatever else you class as a comms aid, the chances are very slim you would get coverage anyway. The only thing that works out here in those conditions is a satellite phone, and that's not on my list of desirables at the moment. So a couple of days under canvas in the bush checking that your nearest neighbour isn't a Black Mamba when you crash into a sleeping bag puts a totally different perspective on the important things in life and I guess that's really what the essence of this whole thread is getting at?

A lot of people out here do this sort of thing so regularly its just not an event, its a way of life - but OK - each to his/her own and whatever presses your buttons. However - on the way home through the 4x4 trails I certainly appreciate the fact that I have a top of the range GPS unit to show me the way back to the black top!
Good thread, it was nice to read all your different views and thoughts. Peace to all.

I would really like to do this for a longer period, maybe a year...? I would really not like to be slaved to money and technology

I have done it and still do once in a while. I take the wife, kids and thier BF's/GF's and got to the beach or to the park. Every month the park has a band playing.

As far as Housecalls goes....ignore. I started about 2 month's ago, ahh the freedom!

Have fun on the 18th Bud....enjoy!

I would gladly do it if I could that is. (without trying to sound like an excuse type of guy) I have a class in school in my senior year of high school where we sit on laptops all day, studying Cisco Networking and CompTIA A+.
