This is a tool that allows you to perform offline malware scans. Sorry for the short post, I'm typing on my phone. Haven't tested yet but looks promising.

Microsoft has published a beta of its Standalone System Sweeper software, a bootable recovery tool that can be used to identify and remove rootkits, as well as other advanced malware. The bootable anti-virus solution uses the same AV engine as Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and supports both 32- and 64-bit installations of Windows.

I wonder if these are very simliar to the stand alone scanner available on the ERD commander discs. Will have to download them and give them go. Nice find though!!
 
I tried it a couple of days ago but I got an error as soon as I started a scan.

I tried 2 different copies ( downloaded to different machines, otherwise it just updates the earlier version.) I used both the CD and the USB versions but no success. The error instructed me to update the application but despite doing this there was no improvement.

For the moment I will stick to my existing live CDs and not waste any more time.
