Looking for POE unmanaged switch

So, I m doing my first VOIP install. Everything is running fine and using Polycom VVX-450 phones. Each computer (10 of them) will have a phone next to them. Im just using the wall wort to power the phones and the computers are daisy chained off the phone.

They want some stand alone phones in some other places and the client is seriously short on power outlets. So, Im looking into a POE unmanaged switch.

According to the pdf on the phones:

Power
• Built-in auto sensing IEEE 802.3af Power
over Ethernet (Class 0) 13W (Max)
• External Universal AC/DC Adapter (optional)
5VDC @ 3A (15W)
• ENERGY STAR ® rated

I gather from this that each phone uses a max of 13w. So, If I have 10 phones thats 130w. Then looking at switches Im confused at the power ratings.

POWER OVER ETHERNET: 8 PoE ports with 64W total power budget

Does that mean that all devices on the switch cannot total over 64W? Kinda doesnt make sense to me as the switch Im looking at right now is a 8 port switch. Would that mean that 64/8 = 8w per port when fully loaded? Im sure I have that wrong :)

I have a 16 port Netgear GS116PP that I accidentally ordered, don’t ask, its open box but otherwise new that I’ll let go for $190.00 plus shipping. Its 183w. PM me if you want it.

No your not wrong. That's why places make higher powered switches. Plenty of POE devices use less power such as cameras and some WIFI APs.
 
You don't want an unmanaged POE switch.
In some cases, you have a port upllinking to another switch, or a firewall, or more expensive..a server.
If you're smart...you'll disable POE on those ports that uplink to expensive./important equipment. Because ONCE IN A WHILE...some things line up and power goes out the power, and if it's a sensitive device on the other end..ZAP! You killed a NIC on a server, or the ETH port on that very expensive firewall.

Plus with VoIP, you'd likely want VLANs.

I agree though I have never actually pined that down as happening especially considering PoE+ fits nicely Gigabit Standard as is auto-crossover detection. Not saying it hasn't... have had plenty of bad network adapters and ports over the years.

That said you certainly want a switch that supports VLANs as well as being able to properly handle Trunk vs. Access ports as well as a Native VLAN. You want something that can announce Voice with LLDP-Med (Link Layer Discovery Protocol Media endpoint Detection), and something capable of at least basic (i.e. what Cisco would call IP BASE) Layer-3 functionality should the need arise. The above little fellow can even run OSPF. It is also a great idea to have something that supports SFP+ slots at a minimum, too.

What the switch I linked you won't do is MultiVRF/BGP, which I sincerely doubt you need; since, if you are building dynamic routing tables, you would probably be doing it with an IGP (like OSPF or EIGRP) to work with directly-connected peers and NOT with some router(s) half-way across the world, which is the main use-case for BGP (the most predominant EGP).

POE is "supposed to be" auto detecting, knowing if it's needed or not. But..as we all know, sometimes things don't work as advertised. Hell even "auto MDI-X", or auto sensing speeds for 10, 100, 1000, that doesn't always work properly 100% of the time. Sometimes some weird conditions happen which make it flip it on, and...poof! Up in smoke.

Strange stuff DOES happen, but honestly, I do not worry about it and really do not have problems. I leave PoE+ enabled for every port EXCEPT connections between switches, and that is on a network with over 6,000 PoE+ enabled ports. Now for connectivity between siwtches, I generally use the side modules vs the bulk ports, which don't support PoE anyway.

On switches, I leave power set to auto, which is "on" on every port. Sometimes they do NOT detect right is correct, but usually if wired properly, LLDP is fairly reliable.

Here is my situation:

Email from Client Contact: "Hi, We are going to switch to VOIP because of the cost savings and we would like you to install it".

Me: "Ok, Give me some time to look into this as I have never done one before and want it to go right. I want to check your existing network and make sure its going to support it. We might need some more networking equipment or upgrades".

Email from Client Contact: "Ok, I ordered the phones and have them nailed down on pricing. We just signed the contract. Here is a copy if you want to look it over. Oh, Here are the login credentials to their site where you can configure the phones" (sent via her yahoo email account mind you --- NOOOOO!!!!).

Me: "WHAT??..."
( I grab the Motrin 800 bottle at this point)

I spent last Friday hooking up the phones. Not enough phones - couple short. Power outlets at desks have like dual 6 port power strips plugged in - pretty scary.

lol, I have my emergency pack with me - Thats a large size pill bottle filled with Motrin and bootable flash sticks :) lol....

Once you tell them they will need a new switch and a bunch of labor hours - I'll bet they complain that the cost is eating into their savings!

Edit: Wait until they find out their call quality is crap because their internet is 10/1 DSL.

Edit: And the phones they bought require pass-through to hook up the computers because they only have one drop per desk. AND the phones are probably 100Mbps (because they bought the cheapest ones offered) so they also gave up gigabit to the desktop.
 
@HCHTech Normally your just spot on! :)

However, Their city supplies the internet. About a year ago the city kicked the ISP's out and introduced theirs - 150 MB service. One of the best things the city ever did.

The phones are 1 gig pass thru. So, Thats cool.

Its just their lack of coordination and such that always kills them.

As always prices continue to drop for everything. Years ago an unmanaged POE switch was a lot less than a managed version. These days there is very little price differential, especially if you look at Ubiquiti.
 
With VoIP, you often want to separate the traffic from data. Most modern managed switches support LLDP Med...which is an cool thing that allows you to setup a VLAN just for the VoIP...and the phones that support LLDP Med (just about all new VoIP phones do)..will automatically find it. You don't have to pre-program the phones to use VLAN2 or VLAN <whatever> like the old days.

You often want to dump this voice VLAN out of the switch into some local edgewater/pbx appliance....or create a rule in the firewall that excludes it from any UTM traffic (bypasses)...or out a different WAN port from the data.
 
Exactly, you want to isolate the traffic. Tomorrow, if I can remember on 3 hours of sleep a night after dealing with my crazy taxes, I will post some VoIP snipits for you from some different vendor switches.

First thing to do is find my tutorial on this forum for VLANS and read and understand it because it will help you tremendously.

Basically, what you want to do is create at least two VLANS and typically we recommend not putting the data VLAN 1 though we have all done it. Come up with another VLAN for VoIP. Typically, I always use the same, which is 200 for VoIP and 100 for WAN, OR for larger sites with a LOT of data VLANS at an aggregation/distribution layer, I commonly multiply by 10. For example Data VLAN 211 has Voice VLAN 2110.

Either way, create and name the VLANS on the switch.

Then configure the interfaces into to vlans or the vlans on the interfaces.

On CIsco it will look something like (I am working from memory):

You might need siwtchport mode trunk encapsulation dot1q on a very old IOS, which will otherwise use ISL. You want 802.1q for sure.

Basically, there is no such thing as a Voice VLAN. It's just a buzzword used by Cisco, but putting it on an interface turns on the announcement to let the phones know its VoIP data needs an 802.1q tag for VLAN 20. The computer data will pass through the phone without a tag into VLAN 2.


On the Layer-3 switch, you do routing by terminating the subnets into their corresponding SVIs. This might be at the firewall or somewhere else, but is commonly handled by a multilayer switch by terminating the subnet as a directly-connected subnet owned by that particular switch.
