I got in two Fujitsu Lifebook T5010 for screen replacements this week. Both are docked in patrol cars and both have black screens that are faintly seen when you hold a flash light to them.

Do you think it's just a coincidence for two to go out the same week? Is it a possibility of something going wrong in the patrol car or the dock to cause the screens to go out?

2 in the same patrol car, or different cars?

If its the same car, then I would say a possible faulty inverter in the replacement.

Different cars, coincidence.. How many other patrol cars have the same laptop in them?

Different cars, same make/model on cars and inverters. It's a small department, so maybe 6 total cars, I'd guess 3 with this particular model. The others are Dells. The Dells are my bad HDD bunch.

I wouldn't attribute it to the patrol car setup.
I've had to replace the screen in my Lifebook for the same reason.
And I have replaced 2 (possibly 3) in the last few years... all Fujitsu Lifebook T5010 or T1010.

Usually I don't deal with that stuff but the money the doctor's paid for the Lifebooks makes it worth it to them.

inverters just go bad, they were probably ordered around the same time, experience the same conditions, so i wouldn't think anything of it, either inverter or screen

I ordered two replacement screens from eBay. The first one came in today and the same thing--I can only see anything on the display if I shine a flashlight on it. So, is this a third bad screen or am I missing something?

Why did you order a new screen? Symptoms as described by you suggest a faulty inverter before a faulty screen. I would have ordered one inverter first to test.

EDIT: By inverter I mean Laptop Screen Inverter as required by CCFL screens NOT the DC/AC inverter/transformer used to run them in the cars.

2nd EDIT: Maybe there are models that use LED screens that I don't know about.... if so it could be a faulty video cable.

I'm taking it you didn't order the screen/inverter combo?
Your post above mine mentioned "inverter" and I was assuming that is what you were referring to - but now I think you meant power inverter for powering the laptop.

When I replace a screen I usually look for a screen/inverter combo since the price difference is negligible (usually).... and I don't like replacing screens so I take the extra precaution.

I think I paid a little less than $150 for the screen/inverter combo I got for mine.

Oddly all the Lifebooks I support (including my own) are T1010 models - and parts are quite abundant for those.
For the T5010, I am unable to find squat!
AFAIK those inverters are not interchangeable either.

Contact Fujitsu and see what they have to say about it.

Unless I'm having a really big DUH moment and missing anything that looks remotely like an inverter, I'd say LED. The screen throws me off because there's a connection coming off for a fingerprint reader on the bezel, plus it has a digitizer and its connections, and the power and tablet controls are mounted to the screen. What I ordered for replacement is the entire screen, bezel, webcam, fingerprint reader, digitizer, all neatly assembled just needing to be screwed down and plugged up (using the new screen's cables).

I'm leaning towards mobo fuses at the moment. I'll take one apart Monday and see what I can find.
