Is Ubuntu Linux ready for the average Mom/Pop home User?

I've never used virtual box in window mode. Always full screen.

Anyway. I've seen runs like this degenerate into slanging matches, so I'll gracefully apologise for any offence caused, dig out the virtual box manual and bail out here.

PS. I just tried Kali Linux within a virtualbox. It installed ok, but refuses to recognise the root login I created during the install. I tried installing it twice.
Nevermind.

Maybe something I missed in virtualbox. . :)

Bert,

I just want to let you know that I would be more than willing to help you get things up and running with linux and virtualbox. If you want to run it in fullscreen its entirely possible. All you have to do while you are in window mode is click on 'view' and choose full screen. As for getting guest additions going I will be happy to help with that too. I have not heard of 'kali linux' but then again there are about 100 or more flavors out there with different strengths and weaknesses. I have not even come close to trying them all.

I would suggest that you stick with one of the more popular flavors of linux as the not so popular ones will not have as much support when things go wrong or you want to do something. Therefore, I would suggest 1. Linux Mint, 2. Debian (squeez is the current one) 3. Fedora 17 (not 18 it has bugs) 4. Arch (I have never ran it but its popular).

Every OS you install thru vbox must have guest services installed on the actual guest operating system (as codegreen has said).

Installing Guest Additions:

Installing GA involves selecting an iso from the actual version of VB that you are running. They must match in versions.

1. Download the iso for GA
2. Burn the iso to a cd.
3. Insert the cd while running the host OS and wait til its recognized.
4. Start the guest OS and select 'devices' / install GA.
5. Answer the questions and if your not sure accept the default answers. It will then install the drivers necessary so that they load when booting the guest OS.
6. Reboot your Guest OS.

Should you have a problem with running the GA installer (VboxGuestAdditions*.run) its not a problem. copy the contents from the cd to a directory (/home/bert/GA) and run in a term window as root. Ive had to do that before.

In mint and some others, If you where to go into preferences/monitor and attempt to change your resolution you might find that only a basic resolution is available (600x800). What I found works is to just drag the lower right corner of the windowed OS to get the resolution you want. After this, Then you can switch to full screen mode by clicking on 'view' at your window menus and choose full screen mode. To access these menus again (while in Full screen mode) it is a key combo of rt.ctr, home or something similar. Read the docs on that. I dont use it that often.

The login problem with kali I m sure is related to something in kali itself. Ubuntu used to experience it also. Also, Alot of flavors will not let you login as root. You log in as a user and then if you need to do something that involves root privileges then it will ask for root password.

I think you should stay with this thread and report your progress for others to follow in the future.

Thanks for the apology.

First Problem

So...dug up another laptop I had sitting around, HP Pavilion dv2000, nice little 14.5". Installed Linux Mint 14.4, everything went perfect...until.....it came to the wifi driver.....its a no go. It sucks because its a nice little laptop and windows 7 is just too much for it with that heater they call a graphics chip. Hunted around a little but didn't find anything. I think its a Broadcom but not sure..will conduct investigation maneuvers later this week as time permits.

Also update on CrashDummyBarbara

T Minus 6 days until installation of said Linux Mint Gateway laptop.

choppie:

You probably have to install the firmware for the broadcom wireless.

1. Start software manager
2. Click on edit / software sources
3. click on additonal drivers
4. Install broadcom drivers/firmware
