Is anyone else steering people away from Win 7?

I think what he means its it not right to tell everyone not to use a brand or company's product just because you dont like it, I don't like HP but that doesn't stop me form selling HP Printers when requested, I will just recommend a different brand like Canon or Epson when I'm asked what I would use/recommend then I let the client make the decision.

To complain about and blackball Microsoft because your techs can't figure out the proper procedure for re-installing Windows 7 on a Dell laptop is silly at best.

I just talk to the techs. They got that information from Dell tech support. So I don't know if Dell has a different licensing agreement with MS or if its just their crappy "in a far land" help desk. The tech elevated the call through three people and was told the same thing by every person and the last of three people we talked to were English speaking first language. The first two were India-n. What they are saying is that from now on any hardware replacement requiring a new installation requires a new COA.

I guess I need to have them call MS to activate it and see what happens.

the only thing i heard was that if you changed the motherboard you were SUPPOSED to buy a new COA because its technically a different machine, but when ive called microsoft and activated it, said i replaced the motherboard and they didnt seem to care.

Yes with XP they have not given any problem. I think we had them deny help on a Vista machine when we replaced the mobo at least once. But like you said that was a new machine. I read an article I seem to remember if it was replacement for failure they would allow it but if it were an upgraded mobo/cpu they would tell you to get a new COA.

you take investing advice from Bernie Madoff as well?

Dell Tech Support is good for two things: Parts Replacements, and the stock price of blood pressure medicine makers.

........ and maybe perform a little bit of research before going off on a rant?

So what do you think I am doing here? Hanging xmas dressing? This is one form of research and I came to TN first as it was some place that I come to nightly anyway. By resolving the issue here it helps not only myself but others who might run into the same thing. But that is what I thought these forums are for. Do I have that wrong?

and no i do not proselytize, i give the client my honest opinion on what technology would best fit there need.

Exactly what is the difference?

You're streering people away from Windows 7 based on what your tech has told you about product activation, even though you have no idea if he's burning disks himself off of ThePirateBay or using real deal media? Not the route I would go.

That was a catch title to start a conversation about an issue that came up.

Actually I do know where our discs come from.

I think what he is saying is that he gives advice for one thing without bashing the other.

Seems some have a double standard.

In our 'honest opinions' do we not all compare and contrast the pros and cons of the difference between hardware or software we support and implement?

What is the difference between bashing and a negative review based on the facts? We are seeking facts with this thread, are we not?

for example: everyone seems to agree that Dell Tech help is inadequate so stating that to someone selecting a brand of computer is bashing, is it not?

So how do you do your job if you cannot give your honest opinion of the brand?

So when he does it, its advocating one brand over another and when others do it, its bashing?

Advocating one brand over the other is not bashing. Say someone asks what is the best OS. Well then you say, what are you looking to do? What are you looking to spend? So on and so on. If they say I just want to browse the internet and check mail and don't want to spend much at all then Linux may be for them, but if they are looking for a OS that is easy for the lay person to use and supports many different kinds of industry standard apps then Windows or Mac may be for them. You don't have to say. MS licensing sucks golf balls and Linix is the only way to go.

So a opinion does not mean bashing.

I feel that Win7 is a very stable operating system amongst the rest of the Windows software family. Unix/Linux is good for servers, tablets, phones and other devices that stay on usually for weeks at a time.

I personally use Mac OS because I need a stable environment for programming and website projects. I can leave multiple projects open for weeks and they'll be there just like I left them without worrying about system crashes or such. Mac OS runs BSD Unix under the hood, meaning you could use the terminal to write shell scripts and programs, configure servers and all that other fun stuff! :)

MS-DOS ftw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MS-DOS > 7 > XP > Mac OSX > Linux > Vista

I have been very happy with W7. I have had no issues running a wide range of 32-bit and 64-bit software on 64-bit CPU systems.

More and more developers are coming out with 64-bit versions of their software, which is nice.

If a customer has the hardware to support W7 then I have no problem recommending it.

XP is still strong and reliable. A lot of businesses running XP are reluctant to switch still. Some users have no choice but to stay with XP, this is particularly true for music writers / sound designers due to the audio software/hardware developers being slow to come up with 64-bit audio drivers for very specialized audio hardware.

I use XP on My machine (Kubuntu on another) in as much as Win7 is nice and pretty being a 64 bit OS and not all software is available for the 64 bit, I suggest that people stay with XP (or downgrade to it) at least until the software community catches up. So I cannot recommend Win7 with a clear conscious.

I Recommend Dell over most other computers, the quality of the tech support depends on which "Line" of Dell you have (different support numbers) The "Low end" consumer products are supported out of India, and the "high end" Business class is supported out of the Philippines - a BIG difference.
Don't know why anybody would recommend the consumer stuff w/ a 1 yr warranty when the business class has a 3 year warranty - If a Client buys a better machine the odds of them holding it longer, and needing support go way up. (Don't think in terms of short term money, long term makes you more money - Of course its your reputation).

Think HP means "Has Problems" as HP gives me more heartburn than other manufactures.

Everybody has their favorite product lines...

1. Win 7 is available in both bit-flavours, however I don't see the point in recommending the 32-bit version as it offers little by way of future-proofing.
2. Most 32 bit software will run fine in a 64-bit OS
3. The only significant issue end-users are likely to encounter running a 64-bit OS is finding drivers for legacy hardware. Pretty much everything that comes out now has 64-bit drivers available. It's a simple matter to check first if older peripherals are a concern.
4. Win 7 has some nice features for end users including easier networking (homegroups), better firewall, better security (like it or not, UAC is an important feature), remote media streaming, DX 11, built-in media center, better error handling, and a better/more versatile UI

I can see reasons for netbook users to stay with XP because of the hardware limitations of their machines. For anyone who has the hardware power, though, I see no reason for them not to use 7 as it has so many advantages over the (soon-to-be) legacy OS.

This is incorrect.

Downgrade rights apply to business class software only. Home versions are specifically excluded.

That may be true or not. regardless, it is there hardware, there software. If they want to put DOS 6.1 or Linux, or Windows 95 on there. They can. I believe in that.

Everytime a customer purchases a computer and they dont provide them with a DVD of Windows, I get angry. They purchased that licensed copy of windows, with the computer. Its theirs (theoretically its not, still Manufactures.. but more on that in a minute). There should be no $12 HP charge to have them send a disc. Microsoft, or any other company cannot tell me or my customers what software they can and cannot run.

Besides, Manufactures break the rules with Microsoft all the time. There x1000 copy block purchases of windows, that they slipstream there junk ware into, and rebrandage - they got at a really cheap price. The reason they get it at a cheap price is because the Manufacture is suppose to "Support" Windows, rather than Microsoft. But when you can tech support of HP, or Dell.. they ALWAYS refer you to Microsoft. (There has been a lawsuit about this for 2 years now in Texas, and California. Microsoft is suing the manufactures.)

To answer the Ops question ---> Refer people away from Windows 7? Not usually. Troublesome customers with lots of kids, lots of Frostwire / MP3 downloading that infects there machine on a monthly basis. I bring up the possibilities of Linux. That I install / configure for them to listen to music / movies... / flash for there Facebook games, the like. This way, the chance of receiving a virus is almost zero. I look like a hero, they get a free OS. and i get a life-long customer.
