IE8 not prompting to save login info

A customer called me the other day telling me that her husband couldn't access his webmail. I figured this would be an easy 5 minute job & here I am 2 days later still trying to complete it. It probably did only take me about 5 minutes to log into his email, turned out he was using a wrong number in his email address.

After I figured that out I noticed they were using IE6 so I decided to upgrade to IE8. This is when the problems started. IE6 stored the username & password in the web form so it was fast & easy to log into his webmail. IE8 absolutely will not store either the username or password & won't even prompt to do so.

Things I've tried so far are, reset Internet Explorer settings from the advanced menu, delete the cache, cookies, history, passwords & autocomplete history, & make sure all autocomplete settings are enabled.

It seems many people are having similar problems with IE8 & IE9, but I couldn't find a solution anywhere. I imagine this has something to do with the enhanced security in IE8, there has to be a setting somewhere to fix this.

In the security tab, is reset all zones to default done ?

I got a feeling this might be cookie related but I am not sure of the exact details. Can you get any passwords to stick with other websites that require them but the customer does not use. I ask because maybe something about THEIR SITES are unique and IE8 is simply not compatible with storing passwords for those sites.

How about worst case scenarios of using an addon or plugin that will do the "auto complete" like maybe googletoolbar or something. Whatever it takes to get that machine off your bench and back to the customer.

Or install Firefox, Chrome, ..., ...

But I get that you want to understand and fix the issue at hand. If so, why not try if a clean install of IE does the trick? Uninstall IE, do a (registry) sweep with CCleaner or whatever you like to use, and then install IE8 (XP machine I reckon?)

The problem seems to not be computer related but IE8 specific. IE8 on my computer does the same thing. I already installed Firefox on their computer & told them to use that for now since it stores the username & password.

I just tried a Gmail address with IE8 on my computer & it prompted to store the password, but Roadrunner webmail won't. I've heard someone mention that the website may have code in it such as "autocomplete=off" & that would explain why Gmail works but the Roadrunner webmail doesn't, but why did it work in IE6? Maybe IE6 ignores that command?
