I hate Norton

Left AVG and laptop is running nice and smooth

Of course it is running nice and smooth, so it should be - you've just fixed it.

But this is not a fair comparison, I expect it would also be running nice and smooth if you had cleaned it and set 360 up properly.

The question is
Would the user have had the same level of penetration if he had AVG before?
And will he get zapped now ?

I agree that Norton is more of a millstone than anything useful these days, but we should still make fair and logical statements about it and its competitors.

The best thing about Norton Products is that they have seperate software on their website to remove their junk......

EVERY major AV/AS software manufacturer has tools dedicated to the removal of their software. I think primarily because the solution based in windows is a little dangerous since AV/AS software tends to embed itself into the OS itself.

The best thing about Norton products is that they have a section on their website just for removing that crap!

It's this type of situation that makes me a little nervous with remote support. If I removed Norton remotely, rebooted the computer, and then was stuck on a blue screen, I'd have my hands full getting the customer to do the necessary steps to recover the OS. This would also make me look bad considering everything was fine before. I don't think I'll be removing Norton remotely anymore...

That is exactly what scares me about nation wide remote support. I only do it for local business customers that I know I can get to in case of an emergency.

I won't uninstall Norton anymore remotely. I actually try to avoid uninstalling anything remotely anymore for this very reason. Yesterday I had my second new laptop in with Win 7. Removed Norton, and got a blue screen in return. Unreal.

You are correct. The point I was attempting (and failing) to make was the responsiveness of a machine running AVG versus 360. I have found in that 360 tends to utilize more resources on average than AVG. Either way, I guess something on my last post got lost in translation from my brain to my fingers :D

I'm crawling back into my hole.

I am using Microsoft Security Essentials and it is working awesome so far. I will be installing it on my customers pc's from now on. No nag screens, Small footprint, Very good detection, Simple, Automatic Updates, and more... oh yea it is FREE too :)

I remove Norton or McAffee from a customers computer as soon as I get the opportunity. I really don't like it, I once spend hours upon hours trouble shooting a network slowdown issue between two computers running NIS and Adobe CS... it would work... for a while, then slow down then the network basically became invisible. Uninstalled nortons, whacked AVG free on there and they have not had an issue with network slow downs in months! Initially I suspected nortons but since they'd had a freshly paid subscription, etc. I was reluctant to remove it... However after all else failed - nuking Norton Internet Security did the trick.

Cheers,

Apochimongitus.

I dont understand the issue with Norton

I have been using it on my clients machines for 8 years (its what I recommend) and I have never had an issue?

In the rare occasion I need to remove it / reinstall SYMNRT works fine, strips it all out, and away I go?

I dont like mcafee, as i think its gui is not very nice (although it is getting better)

as for the other, I prefer to put sompething on the mchine that the client knows what it is (eg NOD32 whilst escellent - most people dont know of it)

Maybe im just lucky, i dont know

PLEASE do not think this is an insult...but "ignorance is bliss" as the saying goes...I simply mean if someone uses a program that does not know of an infection then it reports all is well, fact could be it is NOT at all well but since the app cannot detect the problematic files the program is therefore "ignorant" to the actual problem(s). Not my intent to call you ignorant, just making a point about the program that has proven true so many times over so many years there is no way I could even guess the number of times.
