People can be so petty! 🤣
And stubborn!
When I was in my 20's I bought my first home. I was the typical "house proud" guy on my street.

But then the local council removed the $10 "thanks for mowing the verge so we don't have to" discount on our quarterly rates.

That meant I had to use "my lawnmower, my whippersnipper, my petrol, my time" to mow "their" verge.
So while my house and yard looked pristine like what you would imagine from the Monkees song "Pleasant Valley Sunday,"
and yes - my roses were in bloom too - my verge became a jungle of wire-weed, paspalum, bindii and various other woody weeds!

What made it worse was that they planted two English Elm trees on "their" verge, in front of every house in the street. When fully grown they looked amazing, beautiful and shady but dropped so many leaves....
Then they sent me a curt letter about "don't interfere with our property!" when I dug a small flower bed around the trees and planted some poppies, marigolds and petunias!

And because the electricity for the street was on telegraph poles on my side of the street the electricity authority decided to "trim" the trees because they were threatening to touch the wires! Unfortunately the crew didn't understand what "trim" meant and savagely gut the tops out of the trees so they looked horrendous!

I digress.
I dug my heels in and wrote numerous letters to council (Yeah, no internet back then!) about "I don't work for the council" so give us back our rates discount!
My pleas fell on deaf ears and it seemed no one else cared and just mowed the verge in the front of their houses anyway.
I refused!
The council sent a lady to "talk to me" about it, and I told her exactly how I felt!

About 3 weeks later I saw a council ute parked out front and the guy was taking photo's and writing on a clipboard. Several weeks later a crew turned up and slashed the verge, left a mess of weeds and rubbish and drove away.

I just left it.....

One day I relented and spent the whole day cleaning up and mowing the verge. I took several pictures, went and got them developed, wrote an invoice for a days work, put the pics in the envelope and sent it off to the council.

I'm still waiting for them to pay that invoice...

In New Zealand we have never had a discount on our rates for maintaining their council frontage. They do not pay you to maintain the frontage but by law you have to keep it under control and they will get ****** if you plant edible fruit trees or plant gardens on the frontage "AS IT MAY CAUSE A DISRUPTION TO THE UNDERGROUD SERVICES"
