Hi, I had a customer who cannot log into her win xp pro networked domain. I did reset the password for her local user acct, which did no good for her cuz she couldn't log into the networked drives, is there a program on hirens or ubcd4win that will reset domain network passwords for xp pro?

Reset domain password in active directory on the domain controller.

Do you mean to have the server reset the domain password? There is nothing I can do locally on her machine to get onto the network user acct? Admin is on vacation :o(

For a domain user account, and you are on a member server or a workstation that is joined to the domain

  1. Open Microsoft Management Console (MMC). Can be done by typing mmc in run.
  2. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in, and then click Add.
  3. Click Active Directory Users and Computers, and then click Add.
  4. Click Close, and then click OK.
  5. In the console tree, click Users.

    Where?
    • Active Directory Users and Computers/Domain name/Users
  6. In the details pane, right-click the user name, and then click Reset Password.
  7. Type a new password in New password and in Confirm password, and then click OK.

Why can't she log on to the domain? Has she forgotten the password?

If she has forgotten it then it is possible to crack a cached domain password but it's not as simple as SAM passwords and relies on brute forcing the hash.

However their admin people might not be very happy about you cracking their passwords. As a rule, if it's a domain problem then only the domain admins should be doing these things.

is this done from the server? can't do it from hers because she has no admin rights.

This solutions is for a workstation which is connected to the Domain ell. But...Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the user you are logged in as, isn't an Network Administrator, you won't have the option to add Active Directory Users and Computers from within the MMC console.

Yes this has to be done on the server, through an Admin.

as you can tell
I don't have a clue, but I'm all they've got. she just called and said the office lady came in and reset it, but I just sent her your directions, this will not effect any of the other workstations? I think the server may be windows 7, any diff?

The instructions I posted need to be run from the server not the workstation. Also Active Directory runs on a Server OS such as Server 2003 or 2008. However you could install it on Win 7 I wouldn't advise it. Either way you can't really do anything without access to the server and if they have an admin I wouldn't touch it even if you could get access without specific permission.

This will not affect any other workstations, but I wouldn't have end users mess with Active Directory settings.

When you reset a user's domain password it affects their domain account. The server is either running Server 2003 or Server 2008. Windows 7 is a workstation OS.

EDIT: I see adam posted the same time I did. I agree this is something that a domain admin or someone with the proper credentials should handle.

Correct, but AD tools can be installed on Win 7. But I doubt that is the case.

Exactly, I wouldn't want to mess with the whole network. This started as her just telling me couldn't log into her computer, and turned into much more, anyways I'm off the hook, the office manager rebuilt the entire domain, whew! Thanks so much you guys for answering me so quick!!
