Hey everyone quick question might be a obvious one. Im reasearching what programs people are recommending for cleaning the pc and curious what is the approach to actually get them on the customers PC. Do you put the install file on a usb flash drive and then install it on the customers pc and then when your done uninstall the programs? Its actually something ive always wondering around field tech guys honestly. thanks

Another question for Google.

Do you know what a portable application is? And how it works ?

Sorry to put it bluntly, but these are obvious questions.

Portable CCleaner
Portable RevoUninstaller
JavaRa
PureRa
ATF-Cleaner
F-Cleaner
EasyCleaner

.. and the list goes on.

Slap them on a write-protected USB flash drive, and voila !

thank you very much for the blunt answer. I will look specifically for portable progs now.

Since I'm such a nice fella, do a search for Tech Tookit 2.0 here in TechNibble. Its a tookit created by fellow member, AtYourService. Very well put together.

It needs updated in my opinion (more applications) but it still does the trick.
Better yet, it uses a program called 'Ketarin'. Which automatically searches for the programs you've listed in the database, and downloads the updated version (if there is one). Also included is a nice lil' 'Program Launcher'.

All you have to do is download the file. In your USB, in the root of it, create a folder called "Computer-Repair". Exactly like that without the quotes. Extract the downloaded file into this created folder. And then run Ketarin. And Click Update. It will download all the apps, place them in their correct folders, in their correct categories. If the program is downloaded in an archive format (zip, rar, tar, etc) then it will automatically extract the files from the archive using 7zip via command line.

How easier could it get ?

can you stop by and do it for me :D lol

thanks for putting it out there in black and white for me, I appreciate it. And I do use that goggle lady alot but somethings I have a hard time finding. Im going to buy a small Usb drive soley for this purpose and run that tool kit.
Thanks again

Yeah sure I'll do it for you. Or do you just want your hand held? :p

Make sure its a write-protected USB !
Although sometimes its cheaper to go the SDCard option and then get a SD/USB Card Reader. Cheap as chips.

you don't want to be plugging it into an infected machine, and then gettin' a virus on it, to return home later and plug it into your system, infecting your entire network (worse case scenarioa) .. but you get my drift ?

The only problem with goin' this Ketarin ..

I make a zip archive with the necessary tools (in portable app format), and use GoToAssist to transfer and use on their PC. Then I delete the folder when I'm done.

Why would you want to remove them?

I use ninite.com and download the progs that I want and leave them on the computer and I also have a read me file on the desktop that in breif, explains how to use the major functions of each and how often to use them. Like ccleaner, etc.

The people are always grateful that you went that extra step and they feel the are getting value added. And it works in your favor, because 95 percent of people dont do those things and there computer starts getting slow and since you did such a good job for them they will bring it back to you again!

I remove them because most of the licenses I've worked out with companies require it. I'll sometimes give them recommendations on programs they can try, but generally I don't because most of my residential customers would use these programs and mess up their system. A lot of the freeware programs that techs typically install aren't licensed to be installed/used by techs, and while we could get into a long discussion on that point, I've just opted to use tools I've licensed for my work and then take them off.

But as far as the original question, portable apps zipped up and emailed/uploaded if remote, or a program like PortableApps.com are probably the best.

I could never get Ketarin to run always get an error message. could not create or load the database file could not load file or assembly..something like that :-(

well i was able for kertain to updated most of the applications in there. I unzipped the tech tools folder to the root drive of my jump drive. Now when I actually open the launcher application in the folder I get a new window open which has drop downs for all the programs. However when clicking on any of them I get a error executing file message. From my what my spider sense is telling me since ive been trying to find the answer and havent been sucessful. Is I must locate each prog in the list, put the exe in the jump drive also, and then direct the shortcut from the launcher to the corresponding file?

I think i figured it out. I wasnt not selecting download on kertain and now its showing me file sizes. Im seeing a few red x's but from what Ive been reading its not just me experiancing them. Once its done completely downloading Ill see if thats all it was. Im pretty sure it is and im just ozzing with newbieness :D

If they have red x's check its URL and where its downloadin' from. Copy and paste that URL into a browser and see if nothin' happens as well.. If so then its the link that is bad. Find a new one and replace.

You might also have to change the Ketarin settings for Timeout and Times to Retry (don't know the exact wording for those options, but you'll know them when you see them). A few of my tools are on very slow servers, but I still love them, and they just needed a few extra seconds, or another go to connect.

okay im starting to get the hang of this. I love the norton uninstall prog..too bad there wasnt a AOL uninstaller on there. I do have 2 questions regarding the launcher.

1. updates on the keratin does that update the definitions on the scanners or is it just updating the actual exe??
2. How do I add my own paths for say AVG or lavasofts adaware? on the keratin and launcher.

1. depends on the a/v itself, not ketarin.
2. Adding your own paths ? What do you mean ? In ketarin you can define where you want the download to go. if it is an archive, put it in a folder, and then on the last tab of that dialog box, in the second half of it is the 'commands to be executed afterwards'. Type in a simple 7zip command to extract the archive to wherever you want. Now add new app to PStart (Launcher), browse for the file (wherever 7zip extracted it to) and voila !

Now every time you update that particular app, it will extract it to the same folder and overwrite the old files (if you wrote your command properly); as long as the structure is the same in the new version/s then PStart will not need updating at all.

Hope this helps.

For our corporate accounts I place our utilities in a hidden share folder on the server so when we dial in at night to do maintenance it is always handy. For our residential customers I would only leave on a program like Glary Utilities which is easy to use and does not do things they can get into trouble using. Many years ago when I was starting out I left a repair utility on a clients machine by mistake and His kid played with it and messed up a few things and my client called me up and chewed me out for leaving it on there. I apologized, went down there and fixed the machine and never made that mistake again.

Update for TechToolKit

I have been waiting for someone to bring up the TechToolKit again. I have been using it of course but now finding that there are a few apps that are not downloading correctly because of changed source addresses and there are some new apps that should be included (See "Tools of the week"). The current version 2.0 is from July 09 .

Some tweaking of Keratin has left me scratching my head cause I don't quite get how to re-write the options and paths and the support documentation is less than complete.

Is anyone interested in a small adhoc project to update and cleanup the TechToolKit 2.0?

@AtYourService : Interested?
@Methical : you are not invited since you have already expressed your ignorance on the issue (I am still stunned) :p
