How many of you don't accept credit cards?

We just use square. Easiest to set up. Honestly for a shop, I'd honestly just grab a budget android tablet, maybe mount it to the counter some way, and use the square reader and app with it along with a stylus.

I thought quite a bit about Square/iZettle but if I went to buy something, offered to pay by card then was offered a phone with something plugged into it to swipe my card I'd be running away!

Most people in my area have been exposed to Square from other vendors, have seen commercials, or have it themselves.. and know it is a legitimate transaction method. I personally use a 8.9" Samsung tablet to process the transactions in the office, and a Samsung Galaxy SIII when on the road. I have had zero problems or concerns from customers so far, in fact, the first-timers get all excited to be signing a tablet and watch their card get swiped.. I can honestly say I am excited to be taking their money, so it is a win win situation

Same here. I have them sign their work orders and Square on a 10" Thrive. They've always loved it. The very, very few that were skeptical, I walked them through the GoPayment site and did it there or had them pay by cash.

Why by cash? If you don't trust me to swipe your card, I don't trust your check, either.

Ah, you're in the US aren't you? I'm in the UK where these types of devices are still quite new and no-one has heard of them yet and aren't trusted enough.

This is my escape goat:

It's pretty fast, but not much cargo space.

Hahahahahahahahaha!! Thanks for the chuckle! :D

Yes, very much so in the US. Regardless though, from the few customers that havn't been exposed to square, it has been a pleasant experience for them.. more excitement than fear. Give it a go, the worst that can happen is they give you cash or something :D

The fact that you are swiping the card, a long time traditional act, is more reassuring then visiting a website. No one has ever questioned the legitimacy of my reader. They thought it was cool that I could do it on a phone but no one ever thought it was fraudulent. If I had to punch in the card number by hand I think I would get more resistance.

It's something I'll definately do if I get enough customers wanting it. :)

Mate I'd have another look at iZettle. I had their original card reader that plugged into my iPad/iPhone and it wasn't great as taking visa payments was a pain in the rear.

They've now released a chip and pin reader which although costs £50 +vat, is Bluetooth. Connects to your iPhone/iPad/android phone/tablet via Bluetooth and you just hand the customer a professional looking chip and pin pad that they put their card in, the card type and cost appear on the screen for them and they enter their pin, transaction approved. Recently used it to take a £1000 payment, which admittedly cost 27.50 in fees but I covered that by informing them there would be a surcharge to cover fees. It was great. I don't do a lot of credit cards (certainly not many for that amount) so the fee structure is fine for me.

If you're not taking cards at all at the moment you can't really go wrong. Minus the 50 odd quid cost for your card reader there's no contracts or other ongoing fees, just a nice simple 2.75% fee for each card. I'd really consider it.

So they have! They didn't have that a few months ago.

For some reason people react differently when you plug it into a phone vs a tablet. A tablet can be perceived as a work tool I guess while people see it being plugged into a phone and think, "you sext, browse to who knows where, play angry birds and now you're swiping my credit card into that?"

I don't accept credit cards because I don't want to pay extra for a merchant account and whatever else you might have to buy to accept cards. It says on my invoices that I only accept cash or check. It's never been an issue with anyone -- maybe an inconvenience one time or another. I run a very, very part time business. I'll be transitioning to web design and online video production soon. At that point I guess it will be pay pal for me.

Given that it's far and few between I'd look into Square or Stripe, even PayPal as you mentioned. They have that PayPal Here thing, but I'm not going with them for that.

Just got an email from Intuit here in the UK offering to take card payments. The device they supply looks like the IZettle reader I have.

The reader GoPayment has is pretty clunky and I had one of the first ones (still do somewhere, I'm sure). I take Square for in-person transactions and only use GoPayment for their e-check addon.

GoPayment takes 3-5 business days to process, but one thing I do like them for is less questions to process an over the phone transaction. You can do it with Square, just more of a pain over the phone.

I will say, however, I have never used GoPayment's actual reader or app, only their site. Well, except for a test transaction when I first got it. Don't get me wrong, though. GoPayment has a nice app with the ability to store predefined "items" you can use for adding charges only available in the iPad version of Square's app. But, the 3-5 day wait time is why I go with Square.

I know you don't have Square available there, but if you get something with a reasonable fee and quick processing time, go for it.
