Hardware Diagnostics

I plan on installing another hard drive in one of my tech bench systems and install Linux on there...
What version of Linux do you suggest?

RAM: Latest version of Memtest
Hard Drive: Manufacturers tools (you can get them in the system rescue cd or the UBCD)

Then a quick look at the caps and blowing out dust

RAM diags I handle with memTest86, and let it run for a few passes.


For hard drive diags, I stick with Western Digital's WinDLG tool. It's portable, brand-agnostic, included in Hirens(works in live XP mode also), and is very accurate. If it's a drive, it'll test it and test it well.


Everything else I pretty much use process of elimination and my eyes/ears for (swollen caps, noises, etc). AKA, "The Computer Whisperer."
