but their insistence to maintain control of their own product in this circumstance was the correct decision given the historical requirements of devices available at the time.
I dunno man. The "Apple System", the Walled-off garden is the reason that many do not like Apple, and hence their current popularity/use. Their lack-luster machines, no 3rd party manufacturing, lack of business or creator-centric machines, high prices/low value, dwindling 3rd party repair options and parts replacement options, draconian rules, nanny-police built-in... sure, have your updates.
One final thing about updates.. Apple may control them... but in an awful lot of cases Apple simply denies there is a problem.. hence no update... or they are woefully slow to fix issues that would seem to be utterly trivial. I mean, thermal and throttling problems take 5-6+ months to figure out, that the fan needs to run faster and you need to bump up the power limits? Seriously? Where da 'F was all of this quality control? They didn't see that it was throttling? Why does it take Apple so long to do what a PC enthusiast could do in 30 seconds?
How about that update that slowed down your iPhone on purpose for bogus reasons? Is that the blind-control we are lusting after?
How about that
script-kiddie teenager that used openly available Javascript code to robocall 911, taking an Arizona Police call center offline, using iPhones,
via a simple twitter link... it took 6+ months for Apple to fix that!
When are they fixing the problem where if you turn off BT or WIFI from Control Center.. they don't actually turn off, they "disable"... Disable, without being off? What is the purpose of that.. and why is Apple insisting that those
blatant attack vectors remain open? And no, the "current updates" for BT are already broken again... now 99.9% of iPhones have BT on, virtually permanently (Yes, can go to Settings to really turn off... but people don't do that... especially on iPhones and the "common", often dumbed-down, user base that can barely type URL's or comprehend what a URL even is.
I have no less than 5 scripts or Metasploit Modules (Free, open source) that exploit Root access between iOS/OSX, or a pivot point to gain Root.... that Apple doesn't seem to care about. I mean, these things are months old and all over the security sites. Can we get patches to stop unauthorized root access? Sure, as soon as Apple gets around to releasing it.
I wouldn't go with the chemical waste analogy.. we have a perfect comparison, Microsoft. Having the ability of choice comes with it's own challenges... so, in the case of MS, like Google, I don't expect MS to make Intel drivers or Realtek drivers or NVIDIA drivers... just like I don't expect Google to make drivers for Samsung, Oppo, or LG. There is intellectual property involved with this hardware, and Google have not even the right nor proprietary information to make this stuff work, in many cases. This may be a downside to being 'Open', but I rather have a choice in Manufacturers, Brands, Models and accessories along with the myriad of other positive effects (such as a repair industry, at all) of that type of business model.
I already ditched Macs completely a while back because of their model. I still have my 2014 Macbook... but I really only use it at times when ONLY A MAC WILL DO.. usually when I have to deal with Apple's proprietary APFS filesystem... great.. another proprietary and inefficient POS that reinvents the wheel (again) and practically doesn't work on anything else.. Wonderful.
