Getting to boot menu Windows 8

I just learned a cool trick to get to the boot menu of a Windows 8 computer: hold down the shift key while clicking reboot.

In many cases this has been the only way for me to get into the boot menu.

For some inexplicable reason the manufacturers are starting to map F8 to their own boot menus and diagnostic screens.

Drove me nuts with an XPS until I learned this trick.

(and is that F8 key REALLY F8 or do I have to hold down FN + F8? Terribly annoying developments in what should be a simple thing).

Yup the same thing happened to me.

Thanks for reminding me about this. Had a client and former work friend bring in a windows 8.1 all in one system loaded with things, she got the typical page that said call Microsoft your computer is infected etc etc. Her son is apparently in IT and learned stuff on server 03 and Windows XP. Wanted me to extras, didn't want her to buy AV etc. Lol.

Anyway, did the shift restart method, popped right into safe mode, did not even bother booting normally at first, got right into safe mode, inserted my drive with my tools, ran about 4 quick scans, cleaned out registry and temp files, defrag and windows updates, finish up with a bootable scan for leftovers after deleting all system restore points, computer is happy as a lark. I think she'll be happy with it now. Was finished quickly.

Just hold down shift eh? That 's good to know, I was having to enable legacy boot mode to get the windows boot prompt in 8+
