A client brought in his comp and it has a black desktop back ground and the little box in the corner saying windows is not genuine, my advice was for him to legitamise and buy a key or reinstall an older operating system he had the disks for and licence..

Can I buy a Key online for the relevant edition in this case windows 7 ultimate
and just use that key on this installation, His current key has OEM in the numbers, So i just click change key would that work??

Im asking coz i dont want to waist his money and mine and want to know if it genuinley will work that way,

Well I have an MCSE but I have never tried buying multiple volume licences or regestering with them or anything so I dont know the procedures or options available.

I have always bought Retail versions for myself and my clients

I just want to know whether the OS will accept the new key without a fresh install or do you need the Downlaod ISO or Disk that correlates to the key.

Will that make an un genuine installation genuine or do u need to reinstall?

So you've never registered with Microsoft yet you claim to have an MCSE qualification and that you are a Microsoft Partner? This simply cannot be true.

I won't go into the seriousness of misrepresentation under UK law, but I suspect your customer believes he has approached a bona-fide Microsoft Partner to supply a licence.

+1 I'll second this. As an example, I am a reseller of AVG software (for right now-:) and I have the full licenses that I purchased from them and if a customer wants a full-version of the software, I charge them, install the full version, putting in that license#. I have a reseller account with AVG. If you haven't registered with them and you have no reseller account then you can't be an official partner.

Again Jay, please be alert of how you represent yourself to clients: in person, over the phone and on your website. You don't want to misrespresent yourself. As far as your question, if you're saying the customer has OEM as the product key for Windows 7, why would you suggest to reinstall an older operting system?

The system reports the key as invalid and remains unactivated in Control panel. The key is there in the box but why is it still saying not genuine? Its says OEM in the name thats exactly what I dont understand...

So my suggestion was to buy a new key, perhaps a retail or wheteher he should buy a new Windows 7 CD with a key and I reinstall that fresh.

There is no Key on the tower or on the case either, ( Licence Sticker )

After I studied I went straight into my first job as a helpdesk support operator so I never persued getting VL Keys or anything like that in bulk I have just never looked into it or understood what it meant and thought it was only for large corporations

If he's running Ultimate, it sounds more like the fellow decided to upgrade himself and never got the proper key. That, and/or he's running an expired RC/beta.

Ask him to provide the DVD used to install his version of Win7. I'll bet he's only got one for an OEM version of Home Premium.

I have seen plenty of "cracked" versions of WIN 7 with OEM in the Product Number in the control panel. It seems its time to just have the customer purchase a license. If you need to redo the OS then back up the personal data and get it done. Buy a 3 Pack OEM WIN 7 from newegg and save $$$.

Finally some helpful info, thanks MMoore, I thought this version may be cracked or something, The key must Be blacklisted for whatever reason I will explain to the client. So if I get him a new key will it activate this version?
Its win 7 Ultimate so do I just need a new Ultimate key? and say change key

Jay, I wish I could back my answer with a site to refer. I think you would have to use the provided link in the Microsoft WGA failure screen, this will make you purchase through Microsoft and they might prod and poke as to how and where the machine came from? I have no experience with this method of upgrade but.. I think after you pay the money online to Microsoft the current loaded OS will stay and they will authenticate it online and you're on your way. Like I said I'm not 100% sure that they wont make you wait for a disc in the mail, if anyone here wants to advise please do. Microsoft might not want to authenticate that Ultimate Edition because 80% of the cracked versions of WIN 7 Ultimate are laden with rootkits and nasty malware.

If it was an upgrade gone bad or an expired RC version you can keep the current version.

I would wash my hands of this guy. He's running a pirated OS now and, if I'm reading things right, expects you to put/keep it pirated. He wants to make you an accomplice?

Run. Don't walk.

Tell him he needs to pay for Windows or have him pick a version of Linux he likes. If you are playing the legitimate businessperson, don't let a bad customer drag you down to his depths.

No I was thinking of getting a key from a site called keycity, They charge $30 for a Ultimate Key,as I was thinking maybe he could do that as opposed to buying it retail for say $200 because hes so reluctant. should I just give the system back?
