I have a customer's Gateway computer that can't connect to the internet. The ethernet port says it is working correctly but there are no connections available. The ethernet cable is good, works fine on my computer and all the other computers I have had in here. I tried to install a usb wireless n adapter but it would not install properly, nor would a Clear 4G mobile usb adapter. I just tried to install the driver for a usb to ethernet adapter and the driver will not install properly.

I have removed the hard drive and scanned it from my computer with Security Essentials and SuperAntiSpyware. Both came up clean.

Any suggestions?

When you plug the ethernet cable in does the ethernet adapter recognise this?

Take a look inside the ethernet port with a magnifier, any bent contacts?

If not, take a look at the board and resolder the joints.

A little more update, I can't boot the computer to any UBCD4Windows disks that I have. They all bluescreen. I just booted it to AVG rescue disk and it will update, so the ethernet port works under Linux.

Yes, the ethernet adapter recognizes the ethernet cable. It shows disconnected when no cable is plugged in and the light is on when it is plugged in.

Which operating system is it running?

UBCD4win has BSOD'd on a few laptops for me, not a fault of the laptop, incompatible with chipset usually.

When the ethernet cable is connected, what IP address do you get? If any?

If you have an IP address beginning 169, I suggest a virus or TCP/IP Winsock problem.

I'm guessing you've gone through most of these but i'm just laying the things down I would do to troubleshoot.

- Run Kubuntu Live cd to double check it is functioning normally (rule out hardware completely). If fine, do the following:

- TDSSKiller (Rootkit?)
- Combofix (Download latest version from different computer)
- Uninstall LAN Driver and Install Latest
- Try in "Safe Mode with Networking"
- Uninstall any Antivirus/Firewall Software (Especially an expired Norton)
- Remove The TCP/IP Components and Install them again.
- Do an ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew
- Check DNS settings are auto
- Run the following commands in an admin CMD Prompt:

netsh winsock reset catalog

netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Then restart.

Let me know how it goes as it's intriguing me

I loaded Ubuntu and had no network connection. I do get a network connection with AVG recovery CD. Safemode with networking has no network connection. I will download newest combofix and run tdsskiller soon as I can...got to do a netmeeting for now.

I decided I had spent too much time trying to make it work as is and did a nuke and pave. All is well now.
