I have a newly wiped MacBook Pro that I want to add to the clients ABM account.
Do I really need an iPhone to do this?
If it requires an iPhone would an old iPad work?

MacOS devices can be onboarded via web ui. However, iPhones are required for most other things.

@mmerry that is not the same process. ABM is not Intune, nor is it comparable. ABM establishes corporate ownership, and often directs the devices within it to an MDM like Intune. But they are not the same products, they do not solve the same problems.

I don't know 100% on that one, but in general I'd recommend that anyone in this business that's going to deal with Apple computers and or phones own a relatively current model of each. Sure there are workarounds but you're not doing you or your clients any favors by not being a tiny bit immersed in their ecosystem.
If you don’t know what you are doing, call Apple support for assistance
In a way that's a best kept secret. A lot of things that clients ask me to do they might be able to get done from Apple support for free - either over the phone or by taking their stuff to an Apple store. I've even taken a couple of Macs there myself on behalf of clients once I'd reached a stopping point with the diagnostics. They have tools that normal shops don't have access to (unless you're a fully authorized provider I think). So I had them run some final diagnostics before condemning the machine. No cost to me.
