Did Google add the "add an alias..even change primary" feature to GMail?

I could have sworn about a year or so ago I read that Google was adding this common feature to GMail.

Many email platforms have this feature....add an alias...even make it your new primary (default) if you wish.

I've had my GMail account since Google released it in beta. Since I was still in my gaming days....and still sorta young, I kept my nickname (that you see here..and in most other forums).

...but...I'm old now, near retirement....wish to keep this account...but...no longer wish to have this as my primary email. Would like to add an alias..some spin on my actual name..and make it my primary. Don't want to do the "create another GMail account and just forward this one to that". Could if I HAVE TO..but...would rather my first approach.

There are tricks you can play with an existing Gmail address, but if you have something like, say, persimmon@gmail.com, there is no way to alias that to cantelope@gmail.com.
