Delay before taskbar and icons appears

I have a laptop in that when you log on, you have to wait a minute or two before you see the taskbar or icons. I've seen this before, but just wondering as to what causes it.

I looked all over the net, can't find the answer. Maybe i should clarify?

When I log onto the machine I have to wait a minute or two before anything happens, during this time there is NO Hard drive activity.

P.S. I suck at asking questions.

Besides waiting for the icons on taskbar to appear, have you run any diagnostics? There could a number of reasons.....did you check to see what's in the start-up menu? msconfig/startup options, did you check for malware?

You mentioned no hd activity, did you run diagnostics on the hard drive?

Just some things to check if you haven't done so already. Can't really pinpoint a cause until you do some troubleshooting first.

How about answering some if you genuinely want assistance:

What operating system?
What diagnostics have you done so far?
Does it boot OK in Safe Mode?
Have you checked the event logs?

1) XP
2) Scanned for viruses, there were plenty
3) Never went to Safe Mode yet
4) Didn't get a chance to

The original reasong for "repair" was to retreive a document that he had lost, I was unable to find it, so I made sure the machine had no nasties on it.
I gave the system back to the customer today, cleaned out all viruses and such, installed Avira, and did a windows update. I couldnt do much with it since they absoloutley needed it.

Wait are you telling us the problem you where trying to fix isn't even what you where paid to do. Since you where unable to do what you where paid to do I hope you didn't charge him.

I think he's telling us he's playing at business. :(

I did it for a friend, so no I did not charge him. Also sorry for not doing the basics first, I just wasn't thinking. Installing Service Pack 3 shortened the delay a bit, but not much.
