D7's DataGrab vs. Fab's AutoBackup 4 Tech

as per creating the user profile from some very limited looking around and testing it appears that using "runas /user:username <program>" (I used cmd as the program) causes at least part of the user profile to be created, only it does require a password on the account to run. I was able to see the the directory for the account setup. hope this might help

Firefox and Chrome

Datagrab doesn't seem to backup Firefox and Chrome profiles, will this be included in a future version? Or does this already include them and I'm missing something?

That's interesting, never thought of that!!!!! That is probably the sum total ANSWER to my problems!!!!!

And DRAT, I've already created the autologin new user account functionality in DataPut to create the user profiles properly... Oh well, for a future version I will do some experimenting by using that command, and maybe can do away with the autologin I've just implemented.

THANKS!

If it doesn't get Firefox profiles then that is a bug. I'll double-check the firefox profiles backup and see what the problem is. I think I am backing up every profile under Mozilla in appdata however I may be mistaken; and FF may no longer use that folder? I'll double-check.

And yes, Chrome profiles will be included in a future version!!! Look for that SOON!

Just uploaded D7 6.1

Among the new features (related to this thread):
  • DataPut now creates new user accounts and logs in to each one automatically to properly create the user profile before data restoration.
  • DataGrab now backs up Chrome Profiles (so of course DataPut would restore them.)
  • Fixed an issue with unnecessary skip/cancel prompts while DataPut is transferring XP data to a Vista/7 system.
  • Fixed an issue where DataGrab doesn't backup Firefox profiles to the right directory. (so now DataPut can restore them.)
The big thing is that now there is never the need for you to either create or login each profile before restoring data!

Great job man, this is huge. I can't wait try it out, especially with the user accounts auto-creation.

Oh yes, and in case I didn't make it clear somewhere else in the thread...

You can restore data to differently named users. Ex. the old "Owner" profile can be restored to "George" on the fresh install. Just utilize the two drop down combo boxes to the right of the user list to restore. George will be automatically created, logged in, and owner's data copied there.

Incredible work! I know I said that it would take a lot to get us away from Fab's. Well...you have been doing A LOT!

So, I just started my first DataGrab. It is a netbook with two user profiles. Also having it search for word, excel, access and pst's. I hit the Grab Data button and for the last 10 minutes it hasn't given me any indication that it is doing anything. The status in the footer says "Idle..." However, there are some folders (apparently empty) that have been created in the location I chose to backup to, and D7 has been consistently using 30-50% CPU since I started the data grab. Is this normal? I'm just going to let it sit and see what happens.

I'm assuming that it's the searching for extra files in none standard locations that is taking the time, it has added a lot more time the few times i've used that option. I know without that option it works pretty quick.

It finally finished while I was busy doing other things. I didn't see if it ever indicated it was backing up. If it was just taking a while searching for files before the backup, there still needs to be some sort of status update or indicator.

I do need a status indicator of some type during the partition search. It can add a lot of time to the backup process when you select that feature... To be honest I rarely use it myself (the partition search) so I didn't realize I didn't have a status on it!

It would be really great to have the option to only backup files that are not being backed up as part of the user profile when doing a partition search. If I am backing up the Documents, Desktop, etc folders, there isn't really a need to duplicate these files as part of the Partition Search feature. It would also minimize the time needed for the search as you would be leaving out a big chunk of files.

Nick,

Ever since the changes I haven't been able to use it... Unstoppable Copier just stops and stops responding. I did have everything checked. But tried unchecking Minidumps because thats where Unstoppable Copier stops but that hasn't done the trick. I'm going further uncheck one by one to find a combination that will work. I'll let you know what I find.

EDIT: Actually I just found out why it was doing that... It stops responding because its overwriting a existing directory. I thought you had it so it would overwrite a existing datagrab backup. I'm going to try to figure out why its doing if I can.

That's odd. USC should most certainly not trip up on an existing directory. I believe the default behavior in that circumstance is that it should copy only newer files. Let me run some tests.

D7 v6.1.1 just uploaded with this NEW DataGrab/DataPut FEATURE:
  • DataGrab now exports entire Wireless Connection Profiles to XML format
  • DataPut now IMPORTS those XML profiles on a fresh install after restoring data!!!
No need for your client's to have to set up / reconnect to their various wireless networks!!!

This functionality is automatic in DataGrab (when the Get Info... is checked) and in DataPut (when the Re-Import .REG files is checked) but there are two SMALL catches with the new functionality:
  • Both backup and restore must be performed on a live/current Windows OS, does backup from or restore to offline partitions.
  • Both backup and restore are only supported with Vista/7, sorry no XP :(

Just uploaded v6.2 including:

* Fixes to DataPut
* New DataMig functionality!

The DataMig tab is short for Data Migration. It functions like DataGrab/DataPut but rather combines the two operations in to one.

Purpose: for migrating data directly to a fresh install from either an old hard drive slaved to the PC, or from the \Windows.old folder (the backup created by Vista/7 installer when you don't first format the drive.)

This cuts the backup / restore process time in half, as you are only copying data once. Naturally this is only good for those situations where you have allowed Vista/7 setup to upgrade or otherwise create a backup (Windows.old) folder, or where you are installing Windows on a new hard drive and can keep the old one as-is to recover/transfer data from.

Like DataPut, DataMig will also create new user accounts and log them in before restoring data, and it can also migrate data to differently named user accounts.

I have made DataMig a paid only feature as well as DataPut, to thank existing registered users for their support and in the hopes that more people will consider registering D7 - I need all the help I can get with my upcoming lawsuit over D7!
