I reloaded windows on a compaq Presario C300. To my dismay just after the installation screen, when the os reboots, the computer crashes at the boot screen. It then reboots to the boot options. The same thing happens when I choose *Start Windows Normally or *Last Known.....That Worked or *Safe Mode.

I tried reloading it goes through the loading process but once it gets to that point it crashes again.

I have tried the following Windows versions:

XP Pro. Corporate Edition - Did not find Hard Drive
XP Pro. SP3 - As above
XP Ultimate Edition - As above
XP Home Edition - Did not find Hard Drive

Can anyone help, I will be really grateful.

Thanks
Pepeto

Sounds like it could be a bad hard drive. Make sure you can see the hard drive in the BIOS. If you can't, I would remove the hard drive and plug it into a different pc using a usb to Ide/sata converter if you have and see if you can access files on it. If you can, run chkdsk on the drive. Replace and retry. If not you may need to replace with new hard drive.

Have you checked your disks to see if they are preloaded with graphics drivers or anything that could confuse the system?

You said you tried corporate
sp3
and ultimate

by naming these three it sounds as if your are

1) trying to use a disk that was downloaded - ie: corporate
2) trying to use a disk that was slipstreamed - ie; sp3
3) trying to use a disk that is a pirate copy - ie; XP ultimate - there was no such animal

or

4) trying to use a disk that was developed on an intel machine to image a computer that is AMD based.

what hard drive is it?

is it a SATA hard drive? you might have to use the manufactures drivers (windows install gives you the option)

you might also check the bios to make sure its reading the hard drive (and if its sata that its settings are correct)

does the hard drive sound damaged

have you used a boot cd to verify the structural integrity of the HD? use UBCD's MHDD utility...

I have used a boot CD to check the hard drive and it did say all was okay. I tend to want to agree that the hard Drive may be damaged, because when I use an original os installation CD it tells me it cannot find the HD.

Well, GEEKHELP4U, as you suggest it may be that there are stuffs preloaded that is confusing the system, I know Ultimate and SP3 has preloaded programs and stuffs. In respect of your fourth suggestion that seem to be true of the Home Edition. However what do you suggest I do?

As Koonter suggests, you need to download and install the SATA driver, XP does not support most SATA interfaces natively. You would normally install it by pressing <F6> during the initial install or you could slipstream it onto a Windows XP installation disk. As you've already gone through the process of installing a fresh copy of XP it would probably be easiest to install the driver via a boot CD.

I'm not sure about Compaq machines, but on some BIOS's you can change the SATA interface to emulate IDE in which case you should not need any additional drivers although system performance may be slightly impared. At least you could use this method to boot into XP and install the correct SATA drivers from there and then switch the BIOS back to SATA mode.

If you can read the disk contents vis UBCD, then it's almost certainly not the hard disk itself.

If it is a SATA drive, the above mentioned can very well fix your issues. Try downloading the drivers from:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...n&cc=au&dlc=en&product=3347828&os=228&lang=en

If you go this route, you might want to make a slipstreamed Xp disk with the sata drivers on it using nLite for future use.

you can also try the following work around:

In the Bios of Presario C300 you need disable the native Sata Option in the disk configuration, then you reboot the notebook and proceed with the normal installation of XP on your hard drive. This option in the Bios disable the dependence of any disk controller like SATA or Scsi and windows xp will now recognize your disk.

Additionally, I have run into quite a few stubborn HDDs myself. To resolve the issue, I have had to do I low level format using DBAN ( http://www.dban.org/download ) before the HDD would correctly take the install.

It Is Working

GEEKHELP4U,

The laptop is now up and running. I disabled the native SATA option in the BIOS, and was able to complete the installation.

IPTECH,

You mentioned about slipstreaming the SATA drivers onto a windows installation CD, however this term is new to me. I am thinking you are talking about integrating it with the windows installation. I don't know if you can tell me a bit about how that is done.

Anyway guys thanks a million.

Yes slipstreaming is basicly integrating drivers and sevice packes with thw install Nlite is a program that does the job very well.
