Craigslist Hall of Shame

I've heard many established techs/businesses advise against this practice. I tend to agree with them. If people get used to a low price from you how can you justify raising up to the standard pricing schedule of other techs?

At that point those customers will once again start looking for the bargains again, IMO.

I have been considering doing this for when I break out on my own. I wouldn't bottom-of-the-barrel it, but I'd probably charge less than anybody here would just so I can get some kind of jobs and start making a name. Once I feel comfortable I'd raise my rates to probably 1.75x what I started at. If I lose the cheap customers, I'd be ok, because I should have at least a few who would think I am worth the increased price still, which would be enough for me to keep going.

I'm much less worried about losing cheap customers after I am established than I am about getting established in the first place. But looking at the ads locally here, I feel like I could destroy everyone on there by having a decent graphical ad with at least 80% of the words spelled right lol.

I would price myself right in the middle of everyone if I were you. In an area that you live in (Connecticut) I'm sure you don't have to "pound pavement" to get jobs like in my locale. What is the population of your area?

I am located in a triangle of towns with a measly population of about 5K in each town, so the pickin's are a bit slim. I really have to be creative to come up with jobs at times. Fortunately there is a fair amount of small business in the area that need computer techs.

@ Jimbo - That guy is tops! $15? I'll sublet out my jobs to him just to save me the hassle of doing the job myself, then collect the $79 from my customer for the repair! :D

Is it just me or is this guy trying too hard? Anybody so insistent about being a decent guy is creepy.

"About me: I am a former overseas missionary and currently a faithful Christian with degrees in Bible. I have a lovely wife and 2 small children. (I'm a family man.) I am COMPLETELY honest and trustworthy with NO CRIMINAL RECORD (not even a speeding ticket that I know of on my record!). I am VERY friendly, kind, and respectful. I am dependable and flexible. I arrive with nice personal appearance and clean (not shabbily dressed and smelling like dead fish in the Coosa River)."

Yep, way too hard. Anyone who tries to convince me of their virtue so intensely, before I even say a word, triggers a bunch of red flags.

Sounds like his favourite antivirus software is Nuke'N'Pave:

I can remove viruses on your pc runng Windows 7 or 8 for $15. Just make sure you backed up important things on a backup cd or usb. If your interested call or text me.

I recently called a guy from a flyer just to check the price. He was charging 15euros (that´s 20.1945 USD) for a virus removal.

IMO, or he's desperate and really needs the money, or he just remove some stuff from add/remove programs and run malwarebytes...

No way i would do a proper work for that price...

Hello, my name is M@@@ and I am a recent graduate from Yti career institute. I got my associates degree in computer systems and I received both my A plus and net plus certifications.

I have a year of repair shop experience and am looking to help out the hanover area by providing cheap computer services. I have a 30 dollar flat rate for virus removal and a 24 hour guarentee.

If it takes more than 24 hours for me to perform your virus removal I will knock 10 dollars off the price for every additional day that goes by. I can also fix broken computers help with networking/router issues, new router/printer setups, build new computers and much more

So, basically what this guy is saying is that his associates degree, A plus and net plus certs are worth $30/day, and if it takes him more than a day $10 less for each day...

Wow...just wow...

This was forwarded to me. This "handsome" dude provides "extracurricular activities" and "intimate, personalized service."

I wonder if he practices safe hex and vulcanizes his tool? I'd bet he's sporting a 3.5" floppy and hasn't seen a hard drive in years.

Every time you think you've seen it all...

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this a legitimate service? What are your qualifications?
A: Yes. I have years of experience helping people with their computers, and I could probably get rid of that error message/teach you how to use that program/get that new device working.

Q: Are you creepy/fat/smelly? Will I regret inviting you into my home?
A: Emphatically 'no' to all of the above. I'll never do anything to make you uncomfortable. I'm mellow, harmless, and nice to look at.

Q: How much do you charge?
A: Normally, $40 an hour, which is less than a lot of my competitors would ask. Plus, they won't come to your home, or offer you the same intimate, personalized service that I do.

Q: Will anyone else know about our sessions?
A: Absolutely not. I respect your privacy, and make a point of keeping my clients' information confidential. My vehicle doesn't have any signs, and I accept cash payments.

•do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers

Ok that's it. After nearly 5 1/2 years Mr M wins. This entire thread can now be closed. Send him the trophy and gift certificates.

I don't even want to imagine how this might be topped....
