Craigslist Hall of Shame

Here's a weird flipside of your average cragslist repair ad.

Fix any computer for $200 !

http://longisland.craigslist.org/cps/4741298988.html

ATTENTION PC OWNERS: Computer repair for $200.00 or less. Come on down and bring us your broken machine, if we can't fix it for $200.00 or less, we will pay you the difference. Some restrictions may apply.

I don't think a lot of people want to call up a tech who tells you its probably going to be $200, but what does he mean "if we can't fix it for $200.00 or less, we will pay you the difference" ?

Does that mean if a repair would cost $350 they will give me $150 ?

Beats me.

They've got a Facebook page though, so they must be good!

On the spot VIRUS REMOVAL done in less than an hour, with complimentary virus removal package for only $150.00, and all data is preserved. No appointment necessary

Very thorough in their removal process no doubt too. A whole hour!? Wow!

I guess if there are any viruses left after the hour is up, you get to keep those for free!

...with complimentary virus removal package for only $150.00..

Just saw that one. Isnt "complimentary" supposed to be free ?
Either I need a new dictionary or these guys are really confused and should stop posting offers.

lol

Perhaps they meant complementary?

Or ... maybe the virus removal package tells you how nice you are while it does its thing.

Maybe we should be reaching out to these guys on CL. You know, inviting them to join the TN community. Welcome out brethren who have no idea what they're doing and take them in under our collective wings (like we're already doing).

Two things;

1) Not a bad idea. I imagine quite a few people would get defensive, but maybe pointing these people in the right direction can help the industries image.

2) Your avatar and sig should not be changed.

Thanks but the censors have revoked my ability to have one now.

Ooops - correction. My sig was deleted (without notice) but not restricted.

LOL :)
I knew I'd missed something. Being on TapaTalk most of the time, I don't see signatures.

Why do I keep thinking of Whimsyshire? Rainbows, Fluffy Clouds, Cuddle Bears, Pink and Chubby Unicorns... But of course they're all out to kill you. :D

Omg Xander that sig kills me!

Yes, I believe he would make a fine addition to the community. We may have to make an exception and allow him to use ALL CAPS :p

The thing is, if it was just us talking about how awesome we are at our skill level, the forums would be a pretty boring place. The forums exist to ask questions and learn from each other. The people who are your worthy peers today were the newbies of yesterday. We set the standard, shown them that being dodgy is not cool and brought a few of them to our level where they are not a problem. All the same rules still apply, they still need to ask good questions. The new rules just ask "Point them to the thread on how to ask good questions" rather than say "bugger off n00b".

I like the approach, "each one teach one." Basically, make it your duty to take at least one person under your wing and teach them everything you can. Hopefully, the pupil will then out-grown the mentor.

The truth is nobody is going to learn to be a great tech unless they have a chance to gain experience, and each type of experience is different, and while there is some knowledge overlap there are many differing specialties.

You have people like me who are reasonably well skilled dealing with servers, Active Directory, scripting, networking, storage, visualization, high-availability, etc... but I am NOT good at everything. There are a LOT of things I simply do not have the experience doing! We ALL started somewhere! For example, like everyone else, I started fixing computers - no surprise, yet I do NOT look down on End-User support or PC repair techs, who do not have the same experience I do. Just because someone has not had the exposure to the Enterprise environment does NOT mean I look down on them like many of you do Pizza-Techs. I simply consider it different experience. The honest truth is that many of you are a LOT better dealing with the typical malware/virus/adware *hand-holding* end-user stuff than I am, and I respect you for it. Heck, if I got some crap-ware on one of my own computers, and knew a competent repair shop like *Call That Girl*, I would probably just drop it off, pay the $200 and pick it up conveniently fixed!

Similarly, if your big, multi-site computer company had a networking issue, there would be no shame in hiring an outsider like me. Why should you work in frustration for six hours when in that same time you could earn enough to pay someone else to come in and do it for you in two hours?
