Well hey! Scary Tech just sent me a nice little love note threatening me. Yay.

Scary Tech (Brandon?), if you're reading this...hi! So, first of all, my apologies for having a bit of fun at your expense. Your ad is pretty bad, and well...scary. I am not even saying that as your "competition." I say that as regular person. (I don't think we're really competitors, by the way, for many reasons).

Consider this constructive criticism about crafting Craigslist ads. Sorry. As you can see from the rest of this thread, at least you're not alone.

Keep up the good work.

I wondered how long it would take for that to happen. (At least, I don't think it happened yet from this thread.)

Five years and three months of this thread existing and "Scary Tech" wins the prize for not understanding that we really care and are here to make him better. :D

He was a bit of a jacka**.

If you want your Apple computer repaired by a guy who loves to tell jokes and doesn't really take his job seriously, call this guy.

Oh God, that guy. He's posted variations of that for a loooong time and they're always...interesting. He's toned it down somewhat but previous versions had so much Steve Jobs worship you'd think they were married. Came off as obsessed rather than professional.

I would suggest copying the craigslist posts to this thread so we all can enjoy them!

Hi, I am an A+ Certified Computer Technician looking for extra work repairing computers.
I do this for a little extra money and as a hobby.

I can wipe off your hard drive and load a copy of Windows XP Pro or Windows 7 Ultimate back on.
If you have been running Windows for a while without a reload this will greatly speed up computer be it laptop or desktop, also the very best way to eliminate all viruses.

I will reload your chosen version of Windows and a copy of Office 2007 for $40. Will also make sure all the driver files are loaded to keep all system devices working as well.
I can also transfer files from the old computer to the new one, as well as recover files off a working drive that has a bad/non-working copy of Windows on it.
File group transfers are included if needed, I do not do e-mail account transfers unless you also have a copy of your files and there is additional charges as this takes almost as much time as OS installation.

Just drop the computer off to me and I will do all this in 48 hours or less.

Hardware repair is also part of what I can do. Rates on this kind of repair differ.

I will be available throughout the weekend or during the week after 6 PM.

Please call or text me at show contact info my name is John. I will respond to all contacts promptly and I check my e-mail all day long. Text is the best way to contact me.
We can talk about your problem and maybe see what can be done.
Thanks for looking at my post.

Will undercut everyone!
I offer a cheap computer repair service. Any problems you are having I can fix for a price that is incomparable. I do come to you so you don't have to leave the comfort of your home. Any questions you have call/text and Email them to me show contact info I am available whenever you need me.

I work mainly in Moore. I will work in OKC and Surrounding Areas, however the price of a service call will be increased, only by a few dollars.

The prices are relatively standard:
*$25 Service Fee
*$20/h Labor Rate (One Hour Minimum)
*Additional $10 if I need to order parts and have to come out at a later date, hourly rate will still apply, there is no minimum
*It will be $35 If I have to or if you would like me to take the computer home, order all the necessary parts, fix it on my own time without a hourly rate (This is what I recommend it is cheaper in most cases)

Parts will come out of your pocket.

I accept most forms of payment including Credit/Debit, Check, Paypal, and Cash

If the pricing is confusing, call me and I will explain, I will negotiate, or if you find a lower advertised price I will match it.

Most calls cost $45 to fix, with the price for me to come out, if I am there for an hour or less, and if everything goes smoothly.

Oh my

Okay, here we go;

No shortage of silliness in my area for wannabe pc techs. Just a sampling of what I'm up against in my local area.

Title of ad -

Computer Repair Service's
This one gets posted everyday...and they haven't noticed the punctuation is wrong yet? In the ad he lists himself as a "Dell Academy Certified Repair Tech." ;)

This is a professional service our techs are trained and certified, we pride our self's on being highly professional and courteous. We provide service to most of york county.

Services Offered:

-$29 Per Hour in Home Lessons
-$39 Computer Tune Up
-$49 Virus, Malware, and Addware Removal- Moneypak, Cryptolocker, etc.
-$59 Operating System Reinstall, Setup, and Update Service
-Multiple Problems on Different Devices? Only $29 per hr. Service Fee
-7 Days a Week Service
- No Job Too Small
-If You are Having Trouble with Windows 8 We Can Help
-Lost Photo and Data Recovered from Computer and Memory Cards
-No Upsell of Software or Services- No Charge for Antivirus or Utilities
-Linux Installation and Basic Lessons (give that machine a new life)
-New Computer Set Up with Data Transfer and Backup

Great pricing structure, no upsells, no charge for AV and utilities...great business model.

We charge a flat rate of $55 which covers services such as error correction, virus removal etc. If any parts are needed you pay what we pay.
Our service area is a 20 mile radius
So, 20 miles out/20 miles back, spend maybe 5-10 hrs. on a system in the shop all for $55? Another great business strategy. When was the last time you "pay what the dealer pays..." for parts for your vehicle, lol

These guys don't get the concept that low-balling hurts all of us...we all make less money in the end. I was thinking of placing an ad on c-list to try to explain to these knuckleheads, but I doubt if it would sink in.

Being realistic, if you have techs who may not know what they are doing, maybe they are trying to learn and get established so then later they can raise rates?

The thing is, these guys probably aren't paying taxes, don't have a legit business set up, don't pay any kind of insurance, etc. They just don't have any real overhead and they're not in it for long term goals. If you try to explain to the "knuckleheads", you're fighting a losing battle. You might try posting a letter on craigslist, to consumers, pointing out the advantages of having a long-term professional do the work.

I did that a few years ago (the letter is posted in this thread) and it actually got a few people to call me. Another tech even called me and said "Thanks for posting that..."

That's a good idea, I may do that. I know that many of the people going to c-list are looking for the cheapest price anyway and even want to haggle further...so I refrain from posting my services on there at all.

At least, that's the layout of things in my area.

Being realistic, if you have techs who may not know what they are doing, maybe they are trying to learn and get established so then later they can raise rates?

I've heard many established techs/businesses advise against this practice. I tend to agree with them. If people get used to a low price from you how can you justify raising up to the standard pricing schedule of other techs?

At that point those customers will once again start looking for the bargains again, IMO.
