Cookies are a marvelous thing for web developers because they can store any information about their website on your pc, for example if you choose to hide your email address from people when posting on this forum, cookies will remember that and make sure that it is hidden.
most up-to-date browsers ask you if you would like to accept cookies or not. Normally if you keep your browser settings on "accept 1st party" you should be ok from malicious 3rd party cookies
