Computer running slow, even in Safe Mode. I'm thinking CPU Issue

How about ripping the drive out, slaving to another machine and running diagnostics from there.

After an initial set of testing, this is the next step i would perform.

Get that data off !!

No offence intended but I find that approach irresponsible.
During all this messing about, he could have been degrading a bad drive to the point of zero recovery.

How come the kaspersky av disk works when a number of other disks don't ?

I've used K av myself a number if times, but I've never had it run more than 2-3 hours.

Slight diversion here.

I'm assuming you have the latest KAV version. I have the KAV running on my machine, and create a new repair disk every couple of months to so. The older version was "glitchy"

I've never had a problem updating the definitions , BUT that bit does take a bit of time.

Try the KAV Rescue Disk Updater, perhaps. First run is still pretty slow but subsequent runs should be faster.

Computer is running great now, thanks to Kaspersky rescue disc. I used UBCD at the beginning to pull the data off the PC, forgot to mention that part. My Sata/USB adapter is complete crap and have yet to buy one of the docking stations. I keep seeing them on sale on newegg but have bad reviews. Could I get a suggestion on what brand and model # you all recommend?

I would then suggest downloading and using the lastest version. The difinitions will be "relativly" newer.

Don't know why updates are not working.

Are you trying wireless or cable?

I've had a few instances of wireless not working, but never cable.

I've used a Thermaltake BlacX with no issues, or just run an extra SATA and power cable out of the box.

Perhaps. I got fed up with it and moved on to other tools. I'll try that script out.

My toaster died---but I'll get a BlackX the next time I buy one. I'm actually using this Chinese usb3--sata--ide adapter and loving it.

I don't get low level drive function over usb3 like I do with eSata, but that's rarely an issue.

I image the drive any time I damage data, even if what I'm damaging is malware.

On my second one. I broke my first one by accidentally knocking it off my desk. No drive was in the unit thank God but it landed on my UPS on the floor and shattered.

If it is a dell, I would run the Dell diagnostics utility to perform an overall scan of the computer. See what the results are. I doubt it is the cpu because if the computer boots; you can rule out the cpu.
