Carbonite and Windows 7

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up if you plan on installing Carbonite on a Windows 7 machine. Don't install it as of yet. It causes massive VSS errors in the EV which in turn causes random lockups in which a hard reset is required to make the computer operable again. I had this on both of my machines and have definitely verified Carbonite is the culprit. Removing Carbonite resolved the issue.

wow, thanks for the heads up. I don't think any of my customers that have Carbonite are running Windows 7, but I know for a fact that I have one that has a free Win7 upgrade. I don't know if they attempted to use it by themselves or not.

I'll have to send out a warning to my clients.

I have not used it on windows 7 as of yet but I just spoke to customer service via chat and on there website it states they are windows 7 compatible....

Browser and OS Support
Carbonite supports Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 as well as Mac OS 10.4(Tiger), 10.5 (Leopard), and 10.6 (Snow Leopard). If you are currently running Windows 7 or Snow Leopard and Carbonite is not working properly, please reinstall Carbonite to upgrade to the latest version.

If you are using Internet Explorer as your web browser, Carbonite requires that you use version 7 or higher. If you are currently running IE6 and are experiencing difficulty with our website, please upgrade your browser now.

did you make sure you had installed the "newest" version...did u do an uninstall and reinstall and see if it just cleared up on its own?

I have it at both my home and work computers. At work I experienced no lockups and at home it was very sporadic. Maybe one lockup every couple weeks. Just enough to make me have a look in the event viewer. Both machines had a ton of EV errors though (mostly all VSS). Both machines are running Win 7 Pro 64bit. If you do a Google search there are many similar issues. Some don't experience a lockup (like my work machine) and some do. The program itself runs fine. If you check good old Google you'll see there are quite a few threads on it, mostly with 64bit machines.

@geekhelp4u--are you running a 64bit version of Carbonite?

@numnutz--I def ran the latest version...I think we all know not to go by what a "customer service" rep says...;)

Hi Nick

Not just what the CS rep told me, thats what is posted on there website. However we both know you cant always trust what you read online, on vendor websites and google search....You should get someone on the phone and report your findings to them directly and see what they say...update us all too :)
Thanks
Eric

I have the same problem

I have the exact same problem. Running windows 7 64bit, 8gb ram. My computer locks up no less than 4-5 times a day. It seems to usually been associated with the the computer going into sleep mode or the screen saver coming on.

THe event viewer is jam packed with carbonite and VSS errors. To date carbonite has not been able to help me with the problem.

I have uninstalled and installed the newest version 3 different times but it has not helped.

Thanks for the heads up. Although it appears to be an issue with Win 7 64bit only. I know of a friend that has it on 32bit and he said no problems. But I'm not surprised that the 64bit has an issue. I'm finding a lot of software has issues on 64bit. That's why I have 32 at home, but work is 64.
