My MacBook Pro is an A1226 with Snow Leopard originally installed, and Snow Leopard is still installed.
Holding down the 6 and 4 keys doesn't force 64 bit mode. Looking in the System Profiler under Software there is a "No" next to Kernel Extensions.
Looking in Activity Monitor it doesn't show 64 bit for the kernel_task loaded.
I also tried setting 64 bit mode in the command line. It said it "saved" the configuration successfully, but it's still not going into 64 bit mode.
I have no particular need to using 64 bit mode, I'm just experimenting right now.
