HP Pavilion with Windows Vista. Computer has a blank screen after the HP Logo. Have scanned the computer for viruses, found 2 and removed. Have run Windows Vista repair disc 3 times, still no joy. Any suggestions?

HP Pavilion m9500y

F8 will not work. Can not get to safe mode.

F11 system restore does not work.

F9 diagnostics does but no problems reported.

The power stays on (doesn't cycle) and the computer doesn't restart.

Just a black unresponsive screen.

Tried booting from UBCD4WIN or a *nix distro?
What happens when the HD is unplugged?
Tried installing the OS on another drive?
How did you virus scan the machine if it does not boot to an OS?
Did you try the other video out ports?
Is there a restore partition present?

Just a black unresponsive screen.
So after the logo pressing Esc+Ctrl+Del won't bring up Task Manager to run a new task?
And pressing Esc during the logo also does nothing?

Have run Windows Vista repair disc
Have you ran any BCDEdit or Bootrec commands yet?

Have scanned the computer for viruses, found 2 and removed.
How were these viruses removed, manually or by AV? In windows or offline? Was a backup made or at least a log?

Used B Trevathan's suggestion of Bootrec.exe /fixmbr. This got the machine back to logon.

Thanks to everyone for your input.:)

The problem is that if the hard drive is failing, this will only be a temporary fix and your customer will be right back with the same issues again.
