You could always pull the drive and put in it a usb adapter or slave it to a bench machine and run scans to it, may be quicker.

Just did, nothing looks out of place. I guess I could use Autoruns to narrow out a driver issue.

last black screen I had was caused by avast and I had to do a clean install.
We actually had one last week where Avast drivers were causing the same thing. Have seen it with AVG too.
This is where I love ServicesPE. Very easy to disable drivers and services from running on a non-booting system. It is part of the elderly (but still lovely) UBCD4Win and also on FalconFour's boot CD (but I never told you that OK?)
Also check that the event logs in C:\Windows\System32\winevt are not corrupt as this can sometimes cause a black screen with cursor issue.
